Government agrees new scamera sites
233 extra speed camera locations
The Government has authorised 233 new speed camera sites across England, according to a written statement lodged in Parliament. It has also decommissioned 30 sites where it said safety has improved.
However, a transport ministry spokesman said that new sites didn't automatically mean new cameras. Any new camera would have to adhere to strict guidelines, he said.
Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, said: "Speed cameras are bad news for road safety because they focus efforts on the wrong safety targets. Department for Transport clearly has not been reading its own research properly because the report published shows that claims of benefits at speed camera sites have been vastly overrated.
"We will not get road safety back on track while a single speed camera remains on our roads."

And this after the assurance that there would be no more - oh yes that was probably before the election
Of course - dangle just enough of a carrot to get the donkeys (sorry, electorate) to go where you want to, then whisk it away when you're there...they'll have forgotten all about it in 5 years!
Politician = lying scumbag
“It has also decommissioned 30 sites where it said safety has improved.”
Eh?
If we follow the line of thinking that speed cameras are an effective deterrent: won’t removing the scameras at ‘de-commissioned’ sites remove drivers’ inhibition to travel over the posted limit?
What a beautifully inconsistent, un-scientific, ill-conceived and arbitrary policy this is!
As long as they keep painting those little bastards yellow, I’ll be happy enough.

probably more where they're not making enough money...
They must have reached the conclusion they need cameras on every road to force casualties down and not loose the revenue, but for a failing policy it’s a bit of a long shot. Just how do they justify disregarding the research data that clearly displays serious problems with speed cameras.
It is clear that they want only to achieve causality reductions via a cash return; at least we now understand the value being put on a life which is 3 points and 60 quid.

I am all for safe driving and safe speeds - if you can't drive to the conditions then you are not fit to drive, and as many have said before, I hate this type of policing. Just stick a sensor in place and let the driver be judged. In some places cameras are a great idea and work very well, but most I have seen are hidden behind lamposts, on the way out of a 30mph to a 50mph zone etc...
I would quite happily fund an underground hit squad ala The A-Team to go around taking out these money making PITAs.
On the other hand, I don't mind others being caught and being fined for it, it saves me paying extra road tax etc... Joe - clean licence.

Is the bloke who invented the Gatso up for a peerage?
A former Dutch rally driver? Quite possibly - if he loans Our Tone a few bob...
I think that was the implication.
well he died, aged 78...last may i believe
Googled Maurice Gatsonides. Died 29/11/98 apparently. Thought he was still with us - still is with reminders all over the country. Our Tone would love such a legacy, surely?
Ah, les Francaise would never stand the amount of these pathetic little devices we have to put up with here in le UK! But apart from a small number of rebels (hero's?!) all we Brits seem to do is moan (me included!
) and the governement seems to know that they can do what the hell they like to us safe-driving, law abiding, taxpaying, taxpaying, taxpaying motorists - oh did I mention that we pay tax (a lot)?! :
Viva le Revolution!
