Seen them two days in a row now on the A12, fully livered Mitsubishi EVO's, one silver and one white. Any Essex plod on here? I think they're being used solely for ANPR pursuit duty. Must be 'gift' cars from Mitsubishi or something judging by the amount of maintainance they must need.

All i can say is - You Lucky Lucky Basds!!!!

Think I saw this on the A12 south of Chelmsford on Thursday afternoon.

Got stuck in a 5 mile tailback northbound only to discover an ANPR van in a layby with said support vehicle further up as the cause.

Yes, they could have timed it a bit better and were doing themselves no favours, but i guess if they stuck it there at 2am it would kind of defeat the whole purpose of the thing. Fortunately i was going the other way, but there was still a queue on my side as everyone slowed to look at them!

Must admit that I would have been a bit miffed if they were doing speed "safety checks" - but as it was for tax dodgers I didn't mind so much.

Saw a similar op on the Northbound A12 the other day, an ANPR van in a layby and loads of marked cars on the Kelvedon slip road (dodgy place to be sitting but I'm sure they knew what they were doing).

Apart from the resultant panic braking, I'm all for this sort of thing, presumably they'll be stepping up ANPR work during the summer to nab all the untaxed heaps full of Ilford Navy making their annual pilgrimage to Clacton?

Yes it's a good move overall but there were bad things too due to the DVLA database having inaccurate records for about a third of all vehicles - that was their own figure btw. Hope it's got better, in the early days BiB said it was frustrating getting so many false negatives, and the kit got switched off at times outside of the dedicated operations. HW, any experience or contacts with colleagues that can update on this?

No, Turbo, no help i'm afraid. I did have a mate who was seconded to an ANPR unit for six months, but we haven't stayed in contact.

Isn't the argument for bib having cars like Evos is that they need them these days to catch criminals in fast stolen cars? Long gone are the days when my Dad was young where if you could get away from them it was fair does.

They're still lucky barstewards though aye.

From some of the informative BiB posts on other threads, a 2CV would do, there's no real enthusiasm for the pursuit these days because of the bad publicity when TV presenters get (really) seriously injured crossing the road.

If you want to deter thieves making off in fast cars, give BiB really fast wheels not Mitsis, a fleet of RUF 996 GT2 Nardo plodmobiles would be a better deterrent, once the drivers had been trained up to drive them.

RUF Porsche and driver training - there is no substitute

just out of intrest (sorry for the small hijack), what do the ANPR vans check?....is it just tax, or do they check MOT'S and insurance?

There are 2 main users of ANPR

The DVLA ANPR vans just check tax, but...

As I understand it Police ANPR database is for known criminals, unpaid fine dodgers, no insurance, in fact anything at all if your car has been placed on the database as needing to be stopped.
