Are they legal?

Round signs, black border and a 50 in big black numbers. I thought the signs had to have a red border to be legal?

These round signs were on flourscent backgrounds with signs underneath them saying "Max Speed"

TBH I took notice of them when I needed to and made progress when it was safe to do so!

(This was on a drive from Tenby upto Shobdon in Herefordshire)

Really enjoyed the roads but thought i'd check on the signs for future reference.

Thanks,

Phill

Black border? Sounds merely advisory but IANAL.

See here particularly under 'Combinations of signs and...'

Advisory.

TSGD 2002 applies also to Wales and it states red border for mandatory.

Well advised to take heed of them - not put out without reason.

Hi DVD - if these signs are 'only' advisory could you elaborate on the possible penalties for non-compliance ? . I guess they could use dangerous driving or driving without due care and attention but surely they they have that option anyway ?

While awaiting DVD's wiser words, these less wise ones say there's no penalty, as such and at the time. However if something happens a bit later on, around the decreasing radius bend ahead for example, that could be seen to have been adversely affected by not complying with an advisory, that would be taken into account in any determination of how far short the driving was regarding the expected standard of competence.

We have 20 mph signs with black borders in Newmarket, N Wales on the appraoch to a school. Advisory I believe.

I am not in favour of the real mess they have made at the same location with bright red tarmac, fawn coloured gravel and large white zig zag lines all over the road. What a mess. Civic vandalism I call it.

I should point out, however, that the vast majority of these "advisory" speeds are set to be appropriate for an 87 y/o lady driver in a Morris Minor with bald tyres in the pissing rain. At night.

I think they're good.. not a speed limit but a warning saying "you really should slow down/be careful here".

Very sensible if you ask me.

Penalty for ignoring = being a moron.

I would suggest 'advisory' means just that however, if anything happend i.e unexpected parking on a hedge, it would make it easier to refuse resulting claim from insurance co. They have too meny 'get out' clause's already. Besides that, advisory speed limit signs are a lot more friendly than, see post on scameras!!!

There is a pair of 50 signs with black boarders on the A477 at Kilgetty heading St Clears way in South Wales. I was there only last week, and believing that the signs were only advisary, carried on at 70mph (its a single lane dual carrageway there). Problem was White van man in front decided to hit the brakes at the sign and slowed to 50. Caught me out and even though I was well behind me, the effect of only one brake light on his van and the sun low in the sun caused me hit the brakes suddenly and I could just see the car behind me (which was on my tail) jerk to the left to avoid me.

Some safety I thought.

Sensible if they actually mark out a REAL hazard. The number of "SLOW" and "Sharp Bend" signs that signify another minor turn in the road are killers too. All it needs is a series of these "false" signs combined with one that really means what it says to cause a incident.
