Per Austrian News
"Noch schnellere Schlitten fuer den Verkerhrsminister" (headline in "Wiener Zeitung" (translated roughly in title above )

und the BBC five minutes ago....

Austrian Transport Minister has announced that an alpine motorway ist to have speed limit increased

Ist currently 130 kph Ist [ 81 mph

Ist now 160 kph 100 mph!

Und apparently NO speed cams either!

The Greenies are warning woe und destruction to the planet..

Und Gorbach's critics are tutting "carnage .. death...accidents..."

Gorbach :- "Stretch in question never has had any accidents und people are driving along a that kind of speed on it already without incident - only the odd fines at present!

He ist proposing NOT to have any speed cameras on this stretch

My kind of guy!

. Can we clone him

Should be no problem, as far as makes any difference dead weight on board only affects acceleration, not top speed

Wildcat, you will know that 'Schlitten' is a German colloquialism for a car and has little to do with wintersport, just like an English 'shed' has little to do with gardening.
Er, where was the suggesion that Faru Wildekatze thought otherwise?

See the topic title.
YYes, she put that there for amusement. The text of her post makes it pretty clear that she knows he was talking aobut cars.

But of course ist there for fun!

We have some fun colloquialisms with this word which originally means "sleigh" or "sledge."

"Ein alter Schlitten" - ist an old banger! heap! jaloppy! bone shaker! Ist adopted as "banger" like French have "bagnole" - but given "bagne" mean hard labour... not sure how this one develop to old heap

If I say to Mad Doc "Ich werde mit Dir Schlitten fahren"

It does not mean we will hurtle around track in either the Moggie or the Stag - necesarily - or perhaps it might mean that depending on context

But I would be telling him that "I will give him hell!"

the verb "schlittern" - means to slide or slip. In car - it mean "skid"

Und Schlittschuh - = "slidy shoe" = "ice skate boot"

I could have titled - that he want to skid faster... or wants faster old bangers...

but somehow "wanting faster sleigh rides" seemed "funnier" to me ..

Ist a logical lingo

But in any case - in general swallowing of "speed kill" - ist good to see that Italy upped to 90 mph on some stretches - und no one dies und they do not appear to have carnage ...

Austria ist testing stretch in High Alp at 100 mph - stretch in question has no KSI history - but ist moderate busy as it carry traffic between Italy, Austria und links to Croatia...

und Germany still keep some derestricts.. und does not record many KSI on them compared to rest of country per their stats.

But then Italy und Austria alike have tightened initial driver training und Germany of course has always had a stiff driving test.

I have always been pro-training /better initial training und continued encouragement to develop skill to best potential as most know. Und we do need to instil in British psyche that ist normal to continue learning these skills - just as folk accept training courses for their normal jobs

It ist no different.

Not sure we could increase to 100 mph - but I see no reason why UK drivers at current skills cannot cope with 80 mph..on motorway. With emphasis und encouragement to improve as constant - und fullest audit of all speed limits being set according to road in question und not some pee-cee target (20m ph wehre it should be.. 30 mph where it should be und so weiter - no real reason to eventually follow Italy and Austria

I looked I couldn't find it.

Do you have a link, please ?

Google turned up nothing.

All Austrian motorways or just some ?

Hopefully the A12 Inn Valley 'bahn. I cruise at 90 mph on that
easily. 110 mph would be nice.

This ist link we found on a Google.. We heard this story on BBC Radio News Bulletins on the hour yesterday morning from 9 amm to 12 pm. - with comments from their reporter in Vienna.

Ist also a piece in Wiener Zeitung (Thursday's press - but they do not appear to have updated their online with this story) as I cannot find it

However "neue economy" ist running the story. Perhaps it filter into BBC websites sometime soon. Perhaps it feature on "listen again" to BBC2 progs of yesterday - I assume they do include the newsreels?

Thanks for the link. My command of German is basic, but it seems
to be mostly hype and about Kartnen [ Carinthia ] only.

I understand that's Villach, Graz, Klagenfurt and so on in the
Central South of Austria.

Possible, but doubtful. This isn't the kind of story that the
BBC will give high priority to.

Section ist in Carinthia - think one section under test will be A2 with one other being on the A10. He plan two stretches for comparison per Wiener piece. If successful - then another two sections in another region will be tested per the Wiener piece which still has not appeared on line.

Ist an important motoring story und ist as if someone ist gagging it now?
