(The Sun - today page 25)

"Despite the increase in traffic, the number of accidents fell by 9 per cent and fatalities or serious injuries dropped by 52 per cent"

Years ago saw an article showing that road deaths were the same in 1946 or 7 as 1996/7, despite there being 100 times the traffic or something.

Just shows how unsafe things were in the "good old days" and how safe we are today.

I find figures like this amazing (even when taken with a pinch of salt).
How can the Government try to make speeding such an anti social activity when all the evidence points to such low levels of accidents and road deaths.

Why doesn't the Government wake up, stop listening to PC minority whingers, and instead invest in somethig more useful, that will cut deaths and improve peoples lives such as cancer research, heart diseaseresearch, drug rehabilition (insert your own worthy cause)....

78%?

How the hell do they define "traffic"?

The number of miles driven on UK roads?
The number of cars on the road?

How?

The number of cars on the roads certainly hasnt increased by 78% since the 80's, neither has the number of people holding driving licences.

IIRC the true figure for traffic increases is something like 30%, how the hell did they come up with 78%?
