NiP arrived today. 51 on an NSL single carriageway. trouble is I was in a truck, hence 40mph limit.
And it was on a dead straight stretch of the A5 with good visibility and at 03:30 in the friggin morning! My mistake for not spotting the fixed cam. Well actually my mistake for exceeding the limit, but thats another story.....

Excuse my ignorance, but if the NSL was 50 (single carriageway), how did the fixed cam figure out you were a truck, or are you saying it would have picked up a car as well doing 51? or were you being sneeky and going a tad faster.
Bumer anyway.

weight or height sensors
Isn`t NSL for single carriageway 60?

There are specific cameras out there targetting trucks exceeding their 40 limit...

My sympathies. I think the 40 limit is pathetic for today's trucks on nsl. Considering you can drive at 30mph in the more hazardous areas just the same as us.
It can be easier to overtake when trucks are doing 40. However, not when there are 20 cars bunched up between you and the truck. Also not at 3:30am.
My sympathies Towman.

Gatso use the strength of the returned radar signal (Radar Cross Section) to determine the size of vehicle.
Truevelo uses the pressure exerted on the sensors to judge the weight and hence type of vehicle.
Both are realtively crude but generally sorts the cars from the lorries, for those in the middle a quick check of the photo before issuing resolves.

I'm a bit worried about this - assuming you're talking about cars, do you really think NSL on a SC is 50?

The cameras can tell from the amount of radar reflection how big the vehicle is. The picture is then examined to check the vehicle size and if it's valid then the S172 is sent out.
It's a really common occurance on the A556 between Northwich and Manchester. It's 4 lanes wide so many truck drivers seem to think dual carriageway rules apply, but they don't.

Yes - needs to have a physical barrier of some form (grass verge etc) beween to opposing traffic directions to make it a dual carriage way and not have two or more lanes.
