Its for a friend of mine (honestly it is!).

NIP arrived this morning. 120mph on a dual in Cornwall a week ago. Already on 9 points and could lose job if banned.

Anyone know what the options are in terms of how to defend/mitigate outcome? (If my friend was a footballer - which he's not - isn't there a lawyer somewhere who has a high success rate of getting people off this sort of thing on technicalities - anyone know how much that would cost - still might be cheaper than losing the job?)

Also, if convicted, what is the likely sentence? (I'm guessing a 6 month ban and £xxx's)

Any contstructive advice gratefully received.

not wanting to be a 'told you so', but if I was on 9 points i wouldnt have been doing 120mph.....I dont think any lawyer is going to get him off that one except on some obscure technicality......

i'd say that he'd better get himself a contract with the local taxi firm for the foreseeable future

Sounds like a candidate for a PACE letter... Dunno if it works, but it's gonna be a ban without doing something definitive.

I know, this does p1ss me off too, regardless of the rights and wrongs of cameras if you've got 9 points and you go 50mph over the limit then you are a retard.

pepipoo is your friend, but short of hiring Nick Freeman (minimum fee £5k, only takes selected cases) I think a 6 month totting up ban is coming your friend's way I'm afraid

What is going to get this guy to slow down.

Some people never learn.

Just out of interest, what's his accident history? According to the "speed kills" brigade he's a crasher...

Well sorry if they must go doing silly speeds make sure your looking ahead first!. You are visible from over a mile away on that stretch of the A303, caveat emptor or get out the vaseline I'm afraid.

If I was on 9 points I would'nt be doing those those speeds on public roads ever

Mind you my laser gun recorded 647mph this week on a stationary car, so he may have been parked up for all we know!

If the road was clear and he was endangering no-one, why should he?

If he was recklessly endangering folks, do him for that.

Arbitrary limits are oppressive, tell your elected critters of your displeasure.

I know just where you mean - fantastic stretch of road. I exceeded your mate's speed on there in the very early morning, but got my come-uppance a week later when the Wiltshire BiB got me at 110mph on the M4.

I'm still waiting for the NIP over 2 weeks after being stopped, but the plan is to find someone at a local firm of solicitors that deals with traffic offences. This way they'll know who the magistrates are, what they usually dish out etc and can give me appropriate advice.

Best of luck to your mate!

Because he's looking at a long summer with no driving now.

True enough as a stand-alone statement but as I suspect we both know, fluffnik was alluding to the absurdity of some low speed limits and the oppressive nature of some enforcement - both without safety benefits - and the morally repugnant criminalisation of some safe driving, rather than the driving strategy to adopt when sitting on nine tax debits.

I`m not aiming this comment an anybody in particular but.

If you lived in your own little kingdom you could set the speed limits to suit you then when you realised that innocent people were being killed by certain people who were unable to see danger ahead you might have to set limits, this is what has happened in this country over the years.

I often wonder, out of all the people that moan about speed limits being to low, what exactly are they prepared to do about it.
Start a campaign.
See there MP about it.

I don`t think so.
IMO speed might not be the cause of some accidents, but for the good of everybody the results are less when the speed is less.

I saw an accident this morning at 5.40am on the Mancunian way. I went up the slip road were the slip road becomes the nearside lane this lane then became the off ramp for the next junction which was down hill and about 400 yards farther on.

I joined checking my mirror, i indicated and moved over to the second lane (because i was not leaving at the next junction).
A car was catching me very fast from lane 3, i was doing about 45 to 50mph (urban motorway) he must have been doing over 75mph.

If he was going for the off ramp which he was he could either pass me then cut me up or go for the inside lane and underpass me.
He chose to undertake me without backing off, i watch him with keen interest.
He probably decided to late brake once he had cleared me, at this point he was hitting the crest of the off ramp, he slapped his brakes on and lost it first to the right then the left hitting the crash barrier then he hit the right barrier then the left then the right again and he was still going faster than me down the off ramp due to it being wet and down hill.

It was a BMW E46 i did`nt see it come to a stop but it must have been a right-off.

Whats the betting he does`nt agree with speed limits.
IMO (again) its people like him that spoil your argument.

This has been debated ad nauseum on this forum and the
upshot is that you can't measure safety in miles per hour.

Life would be a lot simpler if you could, but you can't.

Of course, if impact speeds are reduced, then the intensity
of the impact is reduced.

Impact speed isn't the same as the travelling speed before
the impact.

He's never been in an accident as far as I know. A the time of this incident it was a dry, traffic clear road with a good surface and the car was stable and travelling in a straight line. Not sensible behaviour (especially when on 9 points already) I would agree but not dangerous in my opinion. He's picked all his 9 points up in similar circumstances but at lower speeds previously. He's going to have to learn to keep to the limits and let 90% of the other traffic blast past him in future I think...

I rather think he ist looking at a ban regardless of the previous points if really pinged at such a high speed. If already on 9 points.. he could be looking at rather a long time in taxis.

If I were him .. I would be looking at decent roady bicycles und taking some lessons .. details of local providers on CTC site
