My pal has been done doing 72 in a 30 zone. Don't condone it, but what should he expect?

A ban, unless he has a very very good solicitor.

And probably a lengthy one at that. At that speed, there is also the possibility that the charge could be upped from speeding to something heftier.

That depends. Is it a sensible limit? What were the conditions? etc....

I don't know that it does. Whatever the pros and cons of that particular limit you've got to be a bit dumb to exceed by that much. Either that or 100% sure there's no chance of being detected which apparently wasn't the case.

There's a three lane dual carriageway well away from homes or anything else much, where the limit is 30 then 40, in the rush hour traffic moves along at a steady 50 whereas just either side it's often between 60 and 70. Stupid limit, traffic moves at a safe speed. Somehow you have to think that either this transgression was on a road like that, or at a time when there was nothing much else around. But without more info who knows.

It is of course not terribly difficult to safely do far in excess of those speeds in some 30 limits. Just not a good idea to get caught.

Agreed, the 'not difficult' and 'safely' are pertinent...but yes, getting caught is a bad idea as ideas go.

Good job drivers don't entertain the idea then

Pity there are those who think it's always a problem when motorists are so caught, at those times the 'safely' bit is particularly relevant to the level of injustice involved.

FFS there really are some stupid people about.

Hopefully he will get banned for life, keep the tt off the roads.

Its people doing things like that who give amunition to the speed camera brigade.

There is a time and a place, and that just wasnt it.

Cock.

Slight over-reaction IMHO. We've all done a bit of daft speed at some time or other; he just got caught.

The worst place to speed, a 30 limit.. If it was past a plod shop then presumably it was in or around a built up area.. It was a silly speed to do, and there may well be a good 6month ban in there.......

Agreed, it was stupid, but location is semi-rural and road is wide dual carriageway. People regularly exceed the 30 limit (including plods).

72 was over the top and I wondered if he would be banned/fined/both/charged with something more serious??

Yes. 42 mph over the limit is automatically a charge of
Dangerous Driving.

I don't know the 30 mph limit in question, but I'd
estimate that for 72 in a 30 they are going to get the
book thrown at them.

Supposing the overhead gantries on the M25 accidentally flashed up 30mph at midnight in good conditions and someone was done for going through there at 80.

That's 50mph over the limit! Surely that would be even more outrageous? 80 in a 30! imagine the danger there. Burn him!

Seems to me like you people are automatically thinking the perp was going past a school at leaving off time. I'm thinking it more likely he was the victim of a politically inspired 30 limit.

He's going to get screwed though and probably for absolutely no good reason. Ho hum.
