Round my way there's a car that's fairly obviously been abandoned. The front left tyre is flat, and the tax ran out last month. I'd quite like to rescue it from oblivion as it's not your average scrap car (H plate big bumper golf GTi). As i see it there are two options:

1: Write the the DVLA and request teh last keeper's address. Write to the last owner and enqure.
2: Just rock up with a trailer and have it away.

Obviously option 1 is preferable, but is there a bonus option 3 that i'm missing?

Yep, option 3

Contact keeper and ask him how much he will pay you to tow it away

If I recall correctly, you can ask the DVLA to transfer it into your name, they then write to the owner. (or something like that)

It has come up on PH before.

Hmm, my first thought when you mentioned the type of car, wsa that it had been nicked. They are still worthy of a punt for most undesirables - even now!

I'd see if you can get the local plod to see if anything has been reported first, you could be getting (unwittingly) in to all kinds of bother.

Simply notify the DVLA of change of keeper but with no V5 and they will send a letter to the previous keeper and if nothing is heard you get the V5 in a few weeks, I think there is a specific form you can use. Did that myself some time ago and got myself a fairly nice astra to do up, even better if you know the RK is away for a few weeks as they won't have time to reply

doesnt apply if you can show youve undertaken every practicable measure to trace the vehicles owner. Personally id just go into the post office, fill in form V62 and send off. the new V5 should turn up in a week or so. One word of caution though - that form will ask for a chassis number. unless you can get in and pop the bonnet i dont know how youd get it.

Which is all very well if it's a pound coin that you find in the street, but just filling in the form is not sufficient to show that you've taken "every effort". With a car, it is reasonable to assume that the owner is traceable. Whilst you might successfully effect a change of registered keeper, by filling in the form, you haven't necessarily effected a change of ownership.

So it looks like the best idea is:

Get owner's details
Write to them

Then if they agree, sign over the V5. If it's nicked, great, they can have it back. If no response then send another recorded delivery, and then V62. Only trouble being i have no idea how to move a car without the keys, but we'll burn that bridge when we come to it. My only worry is that it'll be off and crushed before that process is finished.

move a car without the keys... surely a job for a hiab equipped recovery truck..... just like the ones the council use to move your car so they can extort money from you....

Just an update on this.

May 31st - Tax ran out
June 2nd - GONE!

Either someone got there first or the council had it away as soon as the tax expired (i assume it's been reported beforehand but they couldn't do anything). So i'll never know if my plan would've worked. Still, solves the problem of what to do with it though.

Iv have an intresting slant on this one. next door but one the guy died some time ago. his house has been cleared new tenants moving in soon relatives have cleaed all his suff.

Thing is is his car sits out side he had just got a new tax disk ie a full years, a dew days before he died no one seems the slitest bit intrested in car.

problem is its a nice motor nearly new converted to LPG and worth having

Im wondering if i can get away with claiming it as there hardly be able to find the last owner unless the DVLA empoly mediums.

but the thin is theres still 6 months tax left to run.

family dont seem intrested they been and gone ages ago and cleared house. and gone back to poland.

Ideras its a fairly nice motor not a mark on it.

Interesting one...

There is a lovely looking albeit filthy 944 Turbo round the corner from me, obviously enthusiast owned as there is a 'Ring sticker on the back. Thing is, it's just sat on the road, taxed, but hasn't moved in months and has at least one flat tyre...

i've got a similar situation where i live. we had some portuguese people rent the flat next to mine, when they left, they left a D-reg range rover vogueb sat outside.
nothing wrong with it as far i know as he used to drive it, now its been sat there for nearly a year, couple of flat tyres, looking very sad.
i'm not interested myself, but it seems such a waste of a car thats not in bad condition.
