Arrange to have it MOT-ed at a "specialist" LR MOT place down this way?
Can I then drive it down on the understanding that I'm driving it to a pre-arranged MOT? What about the registration issue? Do I need trade plates?I guess so - as otherwise you're in a chicken and egg situation, i.e. can't register it without an MOT / can't drive it without being registered...
You'd need to have a good reason as to why an MOT station in Doncaster wasn't good enough, though.

Interesting. I just phoned the DVLA and their advice was that I wouldn't be breaking the law, but that if I was stopped by the Police I could still be fined at their discretion! Ho hum...

On what grounds, if its not against the law?Oh the joys of British justice!!
Pre-arrange an MoT (wherever... local is best I guess), then it is legal to drive that unregistered, untaxed and un-MoTd vehicle to its MoT. Then on to home afterwards as that is where repairs are being carried out
.
Vehicle must be insured - using its VIN number (to use one 'number' too many
).
It's not an unusual situation.

I would recommend extreme caution if it is intended to go to Donny and drive the vehicle on military plates all the way down south to a pre - arranged test. Being on military plates will show that the purpose of the jopurney is not for testing but to get it down south.
As a non registered vehicle under Reg 10 RV (Reg and Lic) Regs 2002 Sec of State will require it to be registered with DVLA and not being a new vehicle may also require it to be produced for an inspection before issuing VC5 and VRM and subsequent Excise.
To use the vehicle on a road will require Insurance. Will MIB accept a Military No (which as a Crown Vehicle is exempt Insurance) without a DVLA plate?
Further on the same grounds will a MOT Tester accept a vehicle on Crown plates which ia also exempt Test Certificate whilst owned by the Military which it no longer is?
Sorry Mungo, the fact that a vehicle does not have a MOT does not invalidate Third Party Insurance.
By the sound of it the vehicle has been purchased from L. Jackson and Co, MOD - NATO disposals (www.ljacksonandco.com) who should have given advice regarding uplifting matters and registration. If they cannot help then have a words with (www.witham-sv.com) who are in the same line.
Personally seems the most sensible thing is to have it trailered to place of residence then a visit to a DVLA Area Office (details on line) who will properly advise on registration matters.

L Jackson it is - http://dbase.evems.com:1066/FMPro?-db - I haven't finalised the purchase yet so haven't sought their advice. I must say that I was surprised at the DVLA response, which clearly seems poor advice. Edited to add a thank you. Thanks Bill,
I did get your note the other day - sounds like you didn't get my response!
Many years ago I bought a 911 from a German guy who delivered it to my home in Luton. He then removed his german plates to take home and get a re-fund, so I was left with a Porsche with no plates. I phoned the local nick and spoke to a very helpful Inspector in Traffic and told him the car was insured, using it's VIN, but needed an MoT in order to get a UK registration. He asked if it still had German plates, but I pointed out that these would be invalid even if I had them. His point was that with german plates his traffic officers would not look twice!
His advice was to pre-book a test, drive there without plates and if stopped refer the police officer to him and he gave me his direct tel number and name/rank.
Of course, no-one stopped me, I got the MoT and then the reg document.
The Inspector did say that I had stumbled on a 'grey' area of traffic legislation.
