Western Mail said:

the comic list - which includes "My budgie was sick and I was rushing it to the vet" - proves that when it comes to excuses, staff have heard them all.

Their loved ones also got the blame, including the spiteful "my ex still has keys to my car and keeps taking it without asking. I haven't reported it to the police yet."

But untraceable strangers bore the brunt of many other excuses, such as:

"I picked up a hitchhiker who said they liked my car so I let them drive it. I don't have their name or address,"

"My car was stolen overnight and returned to the same point. I didn't report it to the police as the first thing I knew of the matter was when a speeding ticket came through my door."

Some excuses were testament to vivid imaginations, including;

"A strong gust of wind pushed my car over the limit"

"As I joined the motorway, my car was dragged along in the slipstream of a truck. My brakes aren't very good, so I had to keep pace with it."

Perhaps the most bizarre was the claim that "an ice-scraper fell out of a compartment in the door and jammed the pedal".

Others were more believable on face value but proved entirely false, such as one man's plea that his wife was driving despite the picture clearly showing a bearded individual at the wheel.

Another claimed he was trying to sell his car and the person who was clocked by a speed camera was test driving the vehicle. When the story was checked the car was more than 50 miles away from the registered keeper's address.

Wonder why no mention of the hilarious "Conditions were clear and good, the car was well maintained and there was absolutely no reason why I shouldn't have been shortening my journey by allowing my speed to creep up to 80. Why don't you get a proper job?".
