if you are not allowed to carry passengers in a towed trailer, are the bendy buses breaking the law?

Bendy bus isn't actually towing a trailer. The engines in the rear.

Judging by their inbuilt desire to self destruct, they want to get off the roads too.

ATM they are destroying the centre of Swansea, converting 2 way streets into one way streets and causing untold congestion in the proccess just to allow their new 'Bendy-Bus' access to the centre of town.

They've employed 'Traffic Marshalls' to control the traffic while the work is caried out.

All for what - to have a bus with 90 empty seats rather than a bus with 50 empty seats 99% of the time. FFS

The law relating to bendy buses was changed way back in the 80s to accommodate Blunderkitt and his cronies in the Soviet Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire.

Sheffield bought a number of these and found that whilst they could carry passengers, the law did not allow fare paying passengers because they were classed as an articulated vehicle. Of course being Blunderkitt and Labour they found this out after signing the deal with the manufacturer.

So for some years Sheffield people had the pleasure of being able to hop on and off these bendi buses and travel around the city centre for free on a shuttle service.

The law was subsequently changed. Sorry don't have the links to the legislation but being in South Yorks at the time as you can imagine it was of some amusement.

I've always wondered about this - are the driven wheels in the 'trailer' part too? Or is there some convoluted mechanical link, or possibly a hydraulic motor, powering the rear wheels of the front section?

From my understanding of the Merc Citaros, then egine is in the rear driving the rear axle only through a transaxle.

I think some of the older ones had the engine in the front part and the back part was a trailer.

Maybe some of these new bus/train/tram look alikes have multi engines like wossname's old rallycross car.

Now that would be a sport to watch, rallycrossing articulated buses. Then again maybe not thinking about it..

I had a great idea! you could put the trailer bit ontop of the front bit and take up half the road space, call it a twin deck or something...

Engine, gearbox & driven wheels are all in the rear.

A reporter wrote in the Grauniad last year about how much she loathed these buses from the point of view of a cyclist und for some reason poor rider ist very much SMIDSY und in gravest danger of being "SQUISHDY" too because of these idiotic buses. Europe has had them for a while.. but they are smaller ... not as long und of course .. they do have proper facilities for cyclists too.
