Depends on offence.

Endorsements must remain on a licence for 11 years from date of conviction if the offence is :

* drinking/drugs and driving (shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80).
* causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs (shown on the licence as CD40,CD50 and CD60).
* causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis (shown on the licence as CD70).

or 4 years from date of conviction if the offence is as listed below :

* reckless/dangerous driving (shown on the licence as DD40,DD60 and DD80),
* offences resulting in disqualification.
* disqualified from holding a full licence until a driving test has been passed.

or 4 years from the date of offence in all other cases.

They count for three years for totting-up purposes, irrespective of how long they are on the actual licence though.

..... as long as you want them to on your counterpart Licence.

I still have 3 on mine from 8 years ago when I fought the law

and the law won. (Wrapped up a bit of a white line)

See DVLA site about getting points off.

Insurance companies want to know about them for the previous 5 years, though.

But do they only count for "totting up" for three years?

Yes

Not strictly.
Totting points are recorded by date of conviction except the ones that disqualify you, they count from the day of the offence. So your first three convictions could be within a three year period and your conviction and disqualification as a totter could be in the fourth year if the offence occured within the 3 year period. That's why points stay on for 4 years.
