Hi all,

I can't believe I've just spotted poor signposting on a local road which could enable a loophole to allow escape from a hated local talivan.

The 30mph signposts entering the area are not opposite each other on either side of a dual carriageway. I'd estimate that they are staggered by around 20 metres, also one sign is on an entry slip road, the other is in the central reservation.

Anyone hazard a guess as to the legality of this 30 limit? I'll try and get photos at some point...

This Talivan has caught 500 people per week previously - although not me

Have a word with the LA to view the Speed Limit Order for that stretch and note in detail what it says about the length of road involved. It should outline in metres just exactly where the limit starts and ends and could explain the discrepancy?

Then with certified tape measure do the business and if it doesn't comply then the Order is wrong and a bar on enforcement.

what's the definition of opposite?

ie 30MPH signs have to be opposite on each side of the road.

How far out of 'kilter' can they be though?

clearly 1 mile would not be opposite, but what about 10 meters?, or 1 meter?

In theory I suppose they should be at 90 degrees to the road. Could be another nice technicality to defeat the scammers

Inner ring road and Ingram Distributor in Leeds has this. A large number of the 40MPH signs have Silver paint on them. If a BIB tries to enforce the limit especially on the Inner Ring Road, (which is signed as a motorway) they are on for a hiding!

DVD (and others) - what I'd really like is clarification on how close together the 30 limit signs need to be, in both x and y axis...

And does the fact that one sign is on the left hand side of a sliproad, and the other is on the central reservation of a dual carriageway change things at all?

Notice that if its signing a restricted road, then there is no get-out for a speeding charge if the initial signage is wrong.

Can you define a restricted road?

We're dealing with a town centre bypass type dual carriageway, it's a non-trunk A road.

I wouldn't bother about it, next thing you know it will become an obsession and you will spend every waking hour looking for mistakes and errors.

What's wrong with that then?

As stated one really should have sight what is defined in the Order defining the limit.

Bear in mind also that whilst TSGD 2002 insists that a limit be signed at Direction 8(3) :

a sign to which this direction applies shall be placed on the relevant road at or as near as practicable to the point referred to in paragraph (2) - (the start of a limit).

At or AS NEAR AS PRACTICABLE gives some lattitude against directly opposite one and another on a dual. Is the presence of the slip road affecting the issue?
