Sorry if a repost but; Have your say.

"PACTS is undertaking the Beyond 2010 research project to generate debate and
influence decision makers about how we can approach the next stage of road
casualty reduction after the 2010 targets expire.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Beyond 2010 project web site at"

The cynic in me is a bit suspicious of the order of the possible answers to Q3 and Q4 in their survey.

Q3 What do you think are the main causes of road deaths and injuries?

Possible answers start with? SPEEDING

Q4 What do you think are the most effective ways of reducing road deaths and injuries?

Possible answers start with? MORE SAFETY CAMERAS

I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

Well, I just filled that in honestly. I suspect my ideas will be ignored as I submitted that driver awareness and road craft should be encouraged and the mantra Speed Kills discouraged.

Well here is the chance to influence future policy - from the way this has developed so far there do not appear to be many clear or sensible thinkers in traffic planning at the moment and this is the opportunity for us to suggest some real innovative approaches to safety - fill in the questionnaire!!

Same here.

I find that the whole questionairer is loaded towards regulation, enforcement and imposed technology fixes, nor training and education

Survey said:
Children from the most deprived backgrounds are more than five times more likely to be killed as a pedestrian than children from the least deprived groups. What do you think would be the best way to tackle this problem?

"Culling of the parents. Unfortunately another political non-flyer, but if the parents of these children are incapable of raising their offspring in a reasonable manner, road training in primary schools should be re-introduced/stepped up. I regularly had police officers at my primary school explaining the dangers of roads and how to use them safely, and it drove the message home."

Your views will be ignored, because the survey is intended only for "road safety professionals."

I put my profession down as "engineer" which is factually correct.

I also ticked the option "Increase awareness and engagement of national/local politicians " with a footnote to say that the current enforcement culture detrimental to safety and is based on misguided policy decisions at the highest levels.

Could someone add in a bit I forgot if they do a new one..

Those poxy rumble strip things on the approach to roundabouts etc.. What t**t thought that reducing the adhesion of the car and the road surface was safe is beyond me... In the rain, I am glad I have traction control in the passat sometimes, braking whilst rumbling over them. Dodgy things..... Suggest they remove them under the improve road safety bit !!

You should try them on a Motorbike, especially those not on a straight section of road and in the wet.......

The survey said said:
It is estimated that up to a third of all road deaths are people driving as part of their job. What do you think would be the best way to tackle this problem?

To which I responded:

Estimated by whom? This sounds like a spurious statement; as a result I will not dignify it with a response.

I'm sure my opinions will be ignored as I have said that we need to ababdon the "Speed Kills" lie. I'm sure the survey is intended to promote proliferation of speed limit enforecement and general motorist bashing but I have done my bit to try and promote training of all users as the way to make all roads safer. This includes teaching children that the road is not a playground.

I also queried the "estimate" phrase.

Given that theyll ignore any sensible suggestions, maybe a good insult would be better?

Well, I heard on the news this morning that road accidents in Gloucestershire are up by a thrird, compared to last year, despite new cameras/speed awareness ads(propaganda) etc.
On the A48, there are three speed cameras on a four mile stretch - I have never seen, or been held up by so many accidents in my life! Only last week there was another fatality - but the road should be very safe, due to the amount of cameras! yeah right! I have said it before, but I am positive from what I have seen with my own eyes, and the amount of times I have been more than a hour late to travel the 12 miles to work, that these cameras are as effective for road safety as the proverbial chocolate fire guard - indeed, I am sure in some cases accidents are cause because the cameras are there - the stretch of road I have to travel on is certainly testiment to that!

Well, I've filled it in very politely, so hopefully they'll at least read my posts.

My answers: Education, education, education. (inc. observation and planning)

People in this country don't need more enforcement, they need someone actually SHOWING them graphically what happens if they get something wrong, and they need some form of advanced training/test to tell them where they're going wrong.
