Right I got flashed by a fixed camera last night whilst travelling on the A17 whilst driving an Iveco Dailey van with trailer at the time. I know I should only do 50, and always do, but this camera was half way down a huge steep hill, it was pitch black so didn’t see the camera and when I got flashed I was showing 55 on the speedo.

Now I know that 55 is accurate as I run a calibrated tacho, so my only query is the 10% + 2mph (?), is it still allowed with the fixed cameras as it seems to be with the mobile cameras. Or are the fixed camera a zero tolerance thing ?

Im just fuming at being flashed as it was on a straight deserted road at 10 o’clock at night by a camera on a hill where your speed naturally increases.

Did the trailer have a number plate on it? The correct one? How unusual (and unlucky)!

10% plus 2mph is only a guideline, and as you say 55mph, then maybe you were doing 57mph?
Also maybe there was not a real camera installed, and maybe just a dummy unit set to flash at small margin over the limit.

Well thats what im hoping for, it was in a national but the camera must have had a height detector on it for getting speeding wagons. So im presuming if they have gone through the hassle of fitting that, then there will be film

Also yes i am in that small minority that makes sure that the trailer always has a full compliment of working lights along with the correct plate for the towing vehicle.

I just guess i have a very long 14 days coming up.

Well hopefully you won't hear anything if the scameraship has any kind of common sense and decency, fingers crossed for you. As already said, a guideline is simply that.

Net result = the law is an ass, you get to contribute to the continued "road safety" empire and perhaps lose a bit of faith in the current system. All in all, a pain in the arris and no benefit to anyone(except Gordy and Bliar of course), nice ones.

The other evening I was driving along a deserted 30mph road where there is a Gatso facing in the opposite direction. As I drove over the white lines in the road it flashed twice. I thought a Gatso only worked to take pictures of the rear of vehicles, or have I been working under a delusion?

Maybe, just maybe, the gatso (was it a gatso? was the flash from behind?) interpreted your van/trailer as a truck, these being subjected to a lower limit.

Or more likely, the camera was out of film
Time will tell - but not very soon if you're not the registered keeper.

Yeah double flash from behind, and i am hoping that it did think i was a truck, although i would still be over the 50 limit (due to it being classed at goods and with me having a trailer) i would hopefully be within the guidelines?

Yeah im also the registered keeper. I will not be happy if i am done though because i only got done in march. Although that time i was in just the van and got done for 57 in a national because at the time i didnt realise my van was classed as goods, oops.

Technically, they are capable of working either way around, but they're only approved in the UK to take rear facing pictures.

Hang on - IVECO DAILY - thats a Transit sized van - , limit in a national is 60(DC).Whats the limit in a national with trailer - only bit on the HC refers to a car and caravan=60. And so also does ABD.
Tried a search , with no luck - might be an avenue to look at.

Possibly one for an answer by BIB.

Over 2 Tonnes =50mph on single carriageway

Iveco daily is 3.5 tonnes

I guess you missed this bit:- Cars and motorcycles
(including car derived vans up to 2 tonnes maximum laden weight)

Wasn't sure what A17 was, hence my question --- from question looked like it was DC , THATS WHY I phrased answer (limit in a national is 60(DC).)Was the bit about trailer that raised questions - however, i drive a Hi top transit on a regular basis ( about same size as IVECO - so i know limits for this vehicle) in an area where the SCP boasts of cams being set lower for heavies and i've never had any probs even at car NSL .

Would suspect cam is faulty - or empty - still only 14 days will tell.

BK - Intrigued by a bit in your post "The other evening I was driving along a deserted 30mph road where there is a Gatso facing in the opposite direction. Look at www.speedcam.co.uk to see the difference between Gatso and Truvello.
Truvello can operate both ways, from front with 3 lines close together and from rear with gatso type markings ( or at least thats what i am led to believe).
A Gatso is only type approved to work from the rear( like this labour govt)( thats my understanding from this site and ones like it ) , and is located on the nearside facing away from you.
IF a Gatso fired into your face - forget it - even go one better - phone up the police for that area and complain" Gatso opersting out of type compliance ". It happened to me , i threatened to go to the press and almost got my Ar** washed. They don't want any reports of cameras not working properly - might lose them great wads of cash

Sorry should have made it clear, the A17 is just a single carriageway.

I am hoping the camera is faulty but only time will tell

Hi oldie, just seen your post from Monday. Its definitely a Gatso, I drive along that road fairly often and I'm familiar with the differences between a Gatso and a Truvelo. That's why I was so surprised to get a double flash while facing the camera (not to mention being dazzled).

Sounds like it thought you were an HGV and snapped you for exceeding the 40. Nothing to worry about I reckon.

Downhill westbound Leadenham bypass by any chance?

SC NSL one lane down two lanes up. Road built as new with the foundations etc ready for the camera in case you didn't know. Also the bridge where the A607 crosses over the A17 used to be a favourite mobile spot to catch people who are caning it with the intention of slowing for the Gatso.
