I dont know if this question has been asked already...but whats the deal with Speed cameras and Motorbikes?

After a few of us have now been caught speeding on the way into work in the mornings (me included...doh!!) my boss has come up with a possible way to argue the case, by saying it's discrimination, as a Speed cameras takes a pic of the front of the car, so to show the drive and the number plate....but how does this work for motorbikes seeing how they have no front plate and wear helmets?? Surely they cant be caught for speeding by a Speed cameras?

Beat me to it

It measures speed and has nothign to do with safety.

Now write it out one hundred times, "I'm sorry PH, it's called a Speed camera".

It would be somewhat ironic to force motorcyclists to carry front licence plates, in order to 'improve safety'.....

What's your "discrimination" point?

To discriminate means to choose between (you discriminate against cornflakes when selecting toast for breakfast).
Hence you don't object to discrimination per se
In the sense of your post, I reason that you sense this "choosing between" to be unfair.
There is no definition of "unfair choosing"
Therefore in law "discrimination", in it's negative sense, is defined by the remedy
Where is the remedy to this method of choosing?

I don't think this argument has legs. Seems to be more jealosy than anything - he got away with something so I should too. Applied to Harold Shipman, I got away with the others, so why lock me up for killing these people?

Just a thought

I think the discrimination part my bosds was tryin to put across is that car the mobile speed cameras can only cature speediong offenses of cars and not motorbikes, due to the fact of the number plate and helmet part.

So in effect...a bike could go past one of the speed cameras doing 40 in a 30 and not get caught for the speeding where as a car driver would

Most speed cams take pictures from behind. The exceptions are Truvelo and (optionally) Monitron cameras.
Also SPECS average speed systems work from in front.

yeah i know the static cameras take the picture from behind...but the mobile ones ...the men in there lil white vans who park up on the side of the road, take the pic of the front of the car, to get the drivers face

Just sounds like "you should be out catching thieves and rapists"

If it is a serious question then I don't think it has any legs as an argument to be let off.

Suggest you buy a motorbike and take the benefit that you perceive.

he's not sayin that motorbikes should have a front number plate.

He's tryin to say it's unfair that a car driver can be done for speeding my a mobile speed camera where as a motorbike cant

Actually they can.

The "operative" sees the bike, clocks it driving safely, presses the cash register button, gets the reading he wants then clocks the plate as the bike goes past.
he then has to sign a statement saying basically that " Yeah yer onor, i the undersigned loser did see the aforementioned safe driver and can verify my falsified readings".....or words to such effect.
What about continuity of evidence? i hear you cry. Dont need none, just the operators statement signed and your fate sealed.
Complete and filthy bastards, arent they?

Justice, Uk style.

Ok, that works for a Mobile maned camera, but what about a front facing fixed truvelo? They cant spin round and get a note of the rear plate.

On discrimination grounds a loser imo, also equally with certain cameras a car driver can be spot on his vehicle NSL @ 60 mph, a heavy driver can be 20 mph over his/her vehicle limit @ 60 cf 40 limit and he/she (Must not discriminate ) will get away persil white.

The law must be applied accurately, impartially, fairly and uniformly otherwise it risks being disrespected by the sector of society which is disadvantaged by one or more of these criteria not being fulfilled.

Personally I see the use of speed cameras as failing all of the above criteria at some point.

PS, actually re motorbikes and cameras I see the law being disrespected by the sector of society which are anything but disadvantaged but that is entirely something else. Or not. I'm easily confused.

Stop calling them speed cameras. The are punishment cameras, run by punishment teams. That's all they do punish people.

If I don't register the car in my name it can't get me either.
Is that discrimination against people who register their cars?
Of course it is!

Could you just do me a favour please and edit your main title to "speed" cameras. I know it was mentioned, but while this item continues near the top it really winds me up.

In the same way as some of the "Speed Camera" signs on the A505 have had the word "Safety" glued over "Speed"!

Isn't running the car with the front plate missing only a 30 quid non endorsable offence still?
