Ahh reminds me of a trip to Czech last year.

Out walking around Brno on a v.quiet Sunday afternoon with a friend, yours truly heads over a crossing even though it was on red, only to be forcably pulled back by her (she's half my size hehe )

Upon enquiring as to why i'd just almost had my feet dragged from under me, she replied that the Police fine you if you get spotted crossing without waiting for the green man, or whatever their equivalent is. I can't remember to be honest.

They also have dirt-cheap public transport that's clean and works. Now remind me who was under Russian occupation until relatively recently, and who wasn't ?

Its a good idea, however the reason why this works in the cities such as LA and NY is that they are all built on the 'block' system where all the roads are a reasonable distance from each other with boulevards running east to west and streets north to south, all perpendicular to eachother. Thus it is easy to have a load of pedestrian crossings at each crossroads which is always within 50 metres or so.

In the Uk none of our cities are like that thus without installing a huge amount of pedestiran crossings with the financial cost involved then this would have no chance of working.

It wouldn't work even if they were installed, because of the bloody minded stupidity and ignorance of the average UK inhabitant. Southampton has spent an absolute fortune on trying to protect both the moronic and idle from us evil car worshippers by installing a crossing point every 3 or 4 car lengths, but you can guarantee the only time you'll see someone crossing (usually a student) it will be between the traffic lights, and while they are on green at that.

We dont need any laws to restrict the pedestrians, we just need simple common sense - i.e. no more blame attached to the driver - have it simple, if a pedestrian walks out into a road at any point other than a designated crossing, and is hit by a driver who is not breaking the law, then the driver is at no fault, period - while we are at it, add into the law that the pedestrian is legally responsible for the costs of any damages and compensation.

I had a fella and his mrs step out infront of me today plus a woman slowly sauntering across the road after seeing me coming. A helpful tool to speed them up I find is to dip the clutch and give the engine a good revving hehe
Mum was horrified when I did that once to a group of chavs who wouldn't get out of the road, one jumped in a bush hahahaha!!

bow Indeed. Comman sense! I don't plan on being hit by the repost brigade but the text regarding the sad demise of our dear friend common sense rings very true today in the UK.

I should add though that in order for me to fully agree then everybody should complete driver education and training to a much higher level (including myself) as I dont believe you can have one without the other.

I rather prefer the Death Race 2000 approach.

Especially to the little s**t who stepped out 30 odd feet from me in a 40 limit then sauntered across the road at a snails pace, but then, he was busy on the mobile. He didn't even see me until I sounded the horn.

It had become one of the latest young, male fashions round here to jaywalk in front of cars, in the hope of scoring an emergency stop from the driver. Combining the impressiveness factor of wheelspinning a small front wheel drive car with the kind of self-imposed Darwinism that, while laudable, ought not to involve the general public in its implementation.

(Although I haven't seen it for a while. Maybe there's some new craze out.)

The kind of mess that will occur the day numpty-on-foot meets numpty-at-wheel will be... unpleasant, for all concerned. While manufacturers may crow about their pedestrian safety scores, there are certain unavoidable physical consequences of a 1500kg solid object colliding with a 70kg, mostly-liquid object.

Glad it's not just me who thinks this is a good way to make people notice they've stepped in front of a motor carriage and whilst they're on their jolly way sauntering across the devil's own highway they should *PULL THEIR fcensoredg HEAD OUT OF THEIR ARSE AND GET OFF THE ROAD!!!

Oh don't go down the route of legislating for the stupid

If a moron gets squished by trying to cross a road at a dumb place then blame the moron not the driver of the car. Unless driver of car was driving like a tit.

I think it should be legal to run over a ned (scottish chav) when he stands in front of my landrover

thumbup By, the way, we have had virtually nothing but legislation for the stupid since 1997.

Yep, seen plenty of people making risky crossings about 10 yards from pedestrian and zebra's before.

A town local to me had a major crossroads all dug up and no right turns from certain directions to make it nicer for pedestrians to cross etc, and within a month or so an old woman was run over crossing about 10 yards from the new islanded pedestrain crossing.

I often wonder if some people have brains.

A main road into work is a dual carriage with a housing estate one side and school the other. First of all numerous crossings where installed, but chav kids decide that they don't need them as they're "harder" than the artics using it to get to the motorway rolleyes So then a footbridge was installed leading directly to the school, of course kids decide they don't need this either. Until of course one of them was knocked down. Now we have 10ft fences down the enitre central reservation, and guess what....

Yep they walk down the side of the fence and cross where it stops for a junction! banghead Just proves you cannot legislate for idiots, there always one step ahead, or is that behind!

Of pedestrian idiots there are more than enough.

Unfortunately there are also more than enough driving idiots who sit on their fat arrogant asses inside their cars and routinely try to intimidate pedestrians who are simply going about their business and who have the right of way.

Yes, I sympathise, but as an occasional pedestrian I hate the nanny-statism that tells me where it's safe to cross. If I can see both ways and there's nothing coming then I don't seek out a Pelican just for the sake of it.

I think in germany you can lose your licence if caught crossing a red. How they punish non-drivers I'm not sure.

They fine them. My brothers mate got hit by a car when crossing the road at the wrong place. When he got out of hospital they stung him for something like £50. SHould have been more, he's a real twit
