At what time on an evening does very loud music become an offence with respect to rining the old bill, ie, like beeping a car horn after 11pm on an evening etc.

Just a house on the neighbouring street has been playing loud music since 3pm that I can actually clearly hear the lyrics in every room in my house over 40m away!

Sounds like a party is going down but when is it legally taking the biscuit wrt to volume etc?

www.nfh.org.uk/law/noise_act_1996/index.php has some info. They define 'night hours' as 11pm to 7am.

Ringing old bill is useless, you have to contact the environmental health dept of the council.
As to what time it is deemed unreasonable, I was told by my council that any time that it impacts on your life is unreasonable, you are entitled to peace and quiet whenever you want it. Getting something done about it is another matter.

Is this a one off or something that happens regularly?

The problem is that the council won't do anything until there are a few complaints to the BiB. So i run ring BiB a few times and then the council.

Is that so?
If you're chopping firewood in your garden at, say, 10 am, but the person next door likes to sleep it off until midday, then you can be forced to wait until lunchtime...and if they're still hung over in the afternoon, you're not allowed to make noise at all?
Even for mad modern Britain that seems excessive.

Last four weekend Saturday nights.

Hoping it's a "end of summer hols" party or similar and this is the last one going out with a bang...

Still going just as loud.

Don't mind people having a party of course, if it's feint background bass even into the nights, but I am getting the vocals too which just intrudes with the TV/radio or just laying in bed! And considering it's quite "house/garage/MC" music it's not even good music to be honest, sounds like a young lads attempt at being Pete Tong, but badly.

Tempted to just ring police for now and pretend to be extra mad. We've got the times and music type written down and will contact the council on Monday. Pretty sure we heard some other people confront them earlier and it went off for 2 mins then back on even louder rolleyes

Dave

edit:Mmmm quiet, 11pm came and the volume went to about 1/4 of what it was, now they sound to be having just as much fun and I can hear myself think!

Cheers for the info anyway, will still be recording/complaining to the council so if it starts up again we are already on a roll

Dave

edit:Mmmmm loud again

If the bib wont attend perhaps a call to them advising of a breach of the peace that will be taking place 10 minutes from now when you go round and heave the stereo through the window....

Although to be honest on the only 2 occasions I have had to go and ask someone to turn it down theres not been a problem. Of course I am 6ft 2 with a shaved head and solidly built - and apparently look scary as hell when Im tired and ready for bed lol

A guy I know lobbed a brick through the window of his neighbours when they wouldn't turn it down and then called the BiB himself. He got a caution for his trouble but the neighbours were good as gold from then on hehe

Well I'm 6ft and fairly well built but there were 20+ young lads all p*ssed so didn't want to end up getting a proper battering

Just think karma will do it's work, when they are at Uni (maybe) revising in a years time and someone turns their music up well loud they'll know

You need to keep a diary of the noise levels and times for 14 days.

When the environmental health respond to your noise complaint the first time they come they will ask you to do this.

If you've already done it, it expedites the process somewhat.

What about ringing up the station with the following anonymous tip-off?

"There are a lot of guys in our street. I'm not sure what they're doing, but they're all over the house, and it sounds like they're... I don't know, test-exploding bombs or something. Oh, and I saw them arrive, oh I don't like to say such a horrible word... but... I think they were speeding, officer."

there can be an unexpected down side to reporting a noise nuisance, as a friend of mine has just discovered, and that's if you try to sell your house!.

These things are logged and buyer will know you've had neighbour problems - not good for the sale!

Can't win these days.

Better of hiring some vigilante thieves to nick their kit

Sure none of the immidiate elderly neighbours would complain if they saw the hifi gear going walkies, they'd probably be helping them along hehe

See if I was you I would go round there with my very drunken friends, (as many as you can coax) a couple of bags of home made vomit, ( easy enough, sour milk, cat food, marmite and carrot pieces of course) and some very cheap strong smelling alcohol.
Invite yourselves in,(what they gonna do call the cops?) Tell them you thought it was a party, nip to the loo "vomit" on the beds have your friends "spill" lots and stay till they go to work the next day.
Then obviously you say "great night, see you next weekend".
Repeat this for about 2 weeks and I am sure by then they will be turning it down so you can't hear it!
