How exactly do they decide penalties at court for road offences? An aquaintance has just got out of court with a six month ban and a fine barely making it into triple figures, his offences?

Well, far too numerous speeding offences to list, the court case was because he was already on 12 points when he got a further 2 letters in the post, PLUS he then falsified the NIP returns, stating other people as the drivers (photo's showed him perfectly, they decided that the bearded chap behind the wheel was unlikely to be his wife...)

I dont get it, another friend was banned for longer, and had a fine 5 times bigger for a single speeding offence where his wheels went over the white line (he was on a MC)

Seems a lot of inconsistancies?

Offences are in fine levels 1-5 depending on offence. Within that range the magistrates have to impose a total fine that the person convicted can pay from disposeable income within 12 months.

which makes even less sense then, as mate with huge fine had relatively small income, aquaintance that walked away only light some loose pocket change is absolutely minted!!

IIRC it was about 80 in a NSL - not 100% on that (was quite a while ago) but I'm pretty sure it was around there.

As a rule, its usually one weeks Gross salary if you are on a short term ban of say 2 weeks or 1 month

So divide your annual salary by 52, and there is your fine

which would make it all the more bizarre, as the fine wouldn't even be half a days wages for him!!
