I have a vehicle that I am "improving". It is currently registered, road legal, etc. How far can I go with improvements before I need an SVA?
Bigger engine
New gearbox (old was automatic, new is manual)
Clutch
Propshaft, rear axel + wheels
Springs & shocks + larger brakes (all around)
Roll cage, seats, fire extinguisher
Instrumentation
Racing fuel cell (in the boot, old one removed)
What remains:
Chassis

Grey area............very grey area.
A friend did some research and actually contacted the correct authorities. He said he was planning on building a completly stock bodied 60`s Beetle with new chassis and Subura Imprezza running gear. The replies were basically no SVA required. One said it pre type approval so no SVA.
He contacted the local SVA test centre and spoke to the top man. He said no SVA.
If you took a stock old car in for an SVA it would fail, but apparently there is some dispensation for standard old parts (????)

I've done something similar with a Suzuki SJ.
Ford V6 with autobox, Diahatsu transfer box, custom props, fuel cell, Fourtrak axles and disc brakes all round with massive 33" tyres, lifted with new rockcrawler springs and a body lift. Only original parts were the tub part of the body and the chassis.
I enquired about SVA, but was told it wasn't required. I kept the suzuki V5, but listed the increased engine size, got an MOT, taxed it and the hardest part was getting insurance with all the mods. I got pulled by the BiB, but only because the wheels stuck out from the arches a little bit and just got a standard rectification form, which got dealt with and everything was ok.

Oh yes change everything on the V5, engine size and number, body style, colour etc. May be best not to change everything at once
I used to have a V8 Kitten and was stopped a lot. The engine number was checked, to confirm the engine wasnt nicked, one picked up on the lack of door mirror and the London plod were going to take it off the road.
Most were just interested.
