Can gas, club and manacle, but not change a flat tyre
Discussion
Letter in today's Daily Telegraph:
Sir - A police vehicle pulled into my forecourt this week with a flat tyre. It was manned by two young, fit policemen equipped with CS gas, truncheons and handcuffs.
However, because of health and safety rules, they were not allowed to change their wheel and had to call a "trained" police engineer to do the job. Health and safety over-reaction?

No wonder they've got no money for fighting crime.
2 cops stood around waiting for someone to change a flat.
The cost of a qualified
tyre changer to come out and change the tyre.
Total cost?
Probably £200 quid or so.
Time for the two cops to change a tyre 15 mins max
Cost?
About £50 quid and they're back on their way.

Errr, actually police cars (Thames Valley are)are covered by the AA like any other car, so the AA could be called out to change the wheel . Time to put spare on should be more like 5 mins.

Do they preferential treatment or do they wait for 2 hours like the rest of us?
Same is true in Greater Manchester. A friend talks of a Police Vectra being sat at the end of his road for 3 hours a few months ago... cause: one flat tyre, awaiting mechanics.
His dad is a Super in the force, he confirms this is force policy!
Reason? Health and safety - 1. What if the oficers injure themselves changing the flat tyre and the wheel it is affixed to, or 2. What if the newly-fitted wheel and tyre come off and injure the police officers or a member of the public?

Simple answer.
Want to drive a police car? Take lessons in basic maintainance. Get taught how to change a wheel. Don't pass, you can't drive the car/van.
If the wheel comes off and hurts someone, thats what insurance companies are for. If the person gets hurt while changing the wheel, tough shit you dumbass. Pay more attention.

Absolutely! The way I see it, we suffer with an ever expanding health & safety/do-gooder/nanny/compensation society backed up with plentifull propaganda and ignorance, which is creating this ever expanding raft of patheticness. Imagine the monster it could become in 20 years time!!
Are those on bicycles allowed to repair a puncture, or do they have to call a fitter too? CAn they carry/push their cycles back to the station?
If they wear a hole in their regulation boots, can they take them to the cobblers themselves, or do they need a specialist and a Methods Statement to have them soled?

Ist nonsense .. nicht? Und just think .. all those speedy drivers passing them und not able to cop them ...
Ist not rocket science to change a wheel. I can do it und it stay on wheel too...und ist common sense to carefully put the old one und position flat on floor so it do not roll aways from you..
Everyone who drive a car should have some ideas as to what go on under that bonnet und how state of tyres can affect handling in any case. Ist called responsibility, safety awareness und ultimately save more lives than this wishy washy pee-cee nonsense of dithering around flapping like chicken with chopped off head ..

The last pair I saw waiting for a mechnic were very diligently policing a pair of Big Macs and protecting the patrons of McDonalds.
- StreakyMad but true, and if anyone is caught changing a wheel, it's a disciplinary....all to do with health and safety. If I change a wheel on the motorway and get squashed, it's my own fault...now I don't particularly see a problem with that but unfortunately the powers that be deem it to be too risky.

Don't get regulation boots anymore, have to pay for them, I tend to go for my old favourite british army regulation boots, don't get blowouts in them, so dont need to call out recovery agents..
