Speed Camera Question
Discussion
Pretty sure this is a no-brainer, but, a road near to work has recently been resurfaced by the local council.
At the bottom of about 1.5 mile of dual carriageway, is a gatso in a 40mph zone. However, the council (or whoever is responsible) hasn't painted the lines on the road in front of the camera.
Am I right in thinking that i can't be "got" by this camera at the moment?
This is, of course, hypothetical, as I would never exceed the speed limit.
Cheers

The cynical part of me would imagine them just using an old picture avec lines, and mixing the two images in a photoshop-style application.
I wouldn't chance it. Also bear in mind that freshly resurfaced roads do have a much less grippy surface and can be hazardous - google SMA for more details.

Thanks for your reply, p-o-d.
The town I work in (Skelmersdale), has god-awful road surfaces. I don't rightly know what the surface is, but the slightest hint of rain, and it's like a skid pan.
The new surface is like a gravelly surface on the newly laid tar, giving a fairly "grippy" surface.
Incidently, the camera is also conveniently located JUST as you come out of a 50 into a 40.

That'll be because you are supposed to be doing no more than 40 by the time you get to the 40 signs & it's trying to enforce that limit & stop people still doing 50+ in the 40.
If it was set to prosecute you for doing 40 in a 50 then that would be somethng to complain about.

The lines are required to verify claimed speed so you can happily ignore that camera and your speedometer and instead use your concentration on trivia like setting a safe speed for the conditions and checking for hazards.

I wouldn't bet 3 points and 60 quid on that, to be honest.
I'm not suggesting he speeds through it, just that he doesn't need to waste valuable concentration making sure he's doing 40mph.
Anyhow it's not a gamble. There can be no conviction from a Gatso which takes two pictures of a moving car without graduations to show how far it travelled between them.

That's what I'm on about; there's a GATSO here in Cleveland that has no graduations and does nick people (the one in Thornaby).

Exactly what I thought. How could it possibly use two photographs to accurately gauge speed, when it has nothing to measure it against?
