My stance on "safety cameras"
Discussion
When I first started driving I was all for them. I was led to believe that they were doing a good thing and reducing speeds does help (especially in Bracknell, home of the inbred novaboy!)
I turned against them not because I was caught speeding - that would have been fair enough. I break the speed limit I take the consequences - it was becuase....
On a 30 zone in the morning (dry safe clear etc) I went to overtake a cyclist. halfway past overtaking the cyclist a loon in a nova came racing round the corner on the other side of the road. So in order to avoid crushing the cyclist I sped up very slightly just to get past and pull in.
At this point there was a camera stealthily hidden behind a tree which caught me at a WHOPPING 34 in a 30.
I called up and explained the speed (the cyclist was in the photo apparently so it should have been easy) and the officer at the end of the phone told me it was "life or death" circumstances to be let off.
When I informed him that it would have been the death of the cyclist or slamming on the brakes and some twat in an escort going in the back of me, they told me that I shouldnt exceed the speed limit no matter what.
I have learned my lesson, next time I will write off the car or kill the cyclist. No speeding = no crime.
Has anyone else been turned against speed cameras for similar reasons or do you just hate em?

I've never been caught by one but I've had similar situations, albeit involving my own life or death.
Lorry to the left, some joker about to drive accross the dual carrigeway. I had even less options than you, as I was travelling at 70, and though my car is pretty proficent at accelerating it requires written notice to reduce its velocity.
Had to sprint forward to get past before he drove out. Crazy fool. Happily the articulated lorry blocked the speed camera's view of me.
Similar situation when some homicidal
in a range-rover thingy decided to block me in the wrong lane when I was overtaking. He'd speed up/slow down to prevent me pulling back in. I never figured out exactly why he was trying to kill me, but in the end I had to out-brake him into a corner!
Didn't waste any time loosing him after that!

I was going over the peaks a few weeks back.
Road was straight, no traffic, dry etc etc.
Doing 80ish and a truck comes out of a junction about 200 metres ahead so I lift off and sit behind it as we are appoaching a brow of a hill now.
Get to the top of the hill, swap a cog and go to pass the truck. Then I see a bloody camera unit sat at the side of the road so I cant keep my boot down to pass the truck I have to sit at 60 while I trundle past. End result - having to be on the wrong side of the road for far too long.
Wonder what would have happened if another car was comning the other way and I "had" to go over the limit? Probably 3 points and a fine I reckon.

funny, I got let off for overtaking something.. however it depends on how you present the case to the CPS lawyer. Be humble, and explain that you don't beleive in speeding, and that the law is to protect us - and that you were reluctantly forced to break the law. And you get off. Dropped before it went to court for the third time. Ho hum. Sometimes the law makes an effort to listen, just that it take a LOT of effort to make it do so.
Don't give up on the law - it is our only marker of civilisation, without it we would have anarchy.

Yeah, it happens a lot - I posted a thread about someone who enjoyed doing this a while back.
If it happens to me, I'm not fussed and I'll happily move back to the left - if they don't want to move, so be it - I have a car worth £500, they might have one worth £50,000... if they are driving like a tw
t then they can explain to the police why they have a car embedded in the front off-side of their car. Hmm, there's only one reason for that really isn't there - they drove dangerously and prevented a safe overtaking manouever. I'd press for an attempted murder charge too... Oh, and incase they got fruity, I have my trusty 'lost' jack handle in the car with me at all times - I may just carry the trolley jack it belongs to incase anyone gets stroppy...

we had a run in with a similar psycho in the Cambridge area, dark green (non metallic) Disco, he was in his early 50's, sandy hair and there was a hi vis vest over his seat back. On at least 3 seperate occasions he tried to run myself or Mrs Apache off the road.
Sometimes it's easier to give up for a while, let the vehicle in front relax etc. I certainly don't want all the insurance hassles, even if it's not my fault (unless I'm in an old Landy/£500 heap, but then I probably wouldn't be able to pass anyway).
Wait a few minutes, and pass when this vehicle has turned off or is busy blocking someone else or answering the phone.

Had never come across many speeding cameras until the area I did live in (Essex) became part of the "keep the cash" scheme.
As such scameras and camera vans started croping up everywhere.
One particular evening I was driving round to a friends house, 31st of december, pitch black (no lights along this road) the road in question has a long down hill stretch before going back uphill into a housing estate, limit 30. I was crusing down the hill and had just got to the point that starting back uphill when I got flashed from behind. B@gg*r!!
The next day I passed by again to try a find out what and where I'd been flashed by.
It turns out the van was parked up on the left behind a huge hedge and a building not to mention in the pitch black at 10am at night to catch speeders!? Obvious it was not.
Funnily enough, I never got a ticket even though I must have been 5-10 mph over the limit.
I Have no respect when I see these types of measures being employed to catch speeding motorists.
To keep kids and pedestrians safe through small villages near schools and town centres fair enough, but on dual carriageways out on the open road?
Which ever political party opts to ditch this scheme gets my vote.
