A friend of mine was recently caught speeding, she was flashed doing 36mph in a 30 zone. The full scenario is she was travelling along a dual carriageway with a 30 limit, she was in the outside lane and was just behind a white van in the inside lane. The white van was doing well under the limit and weaving across the white line regularly. As this worried my friend she decided to pass him, as she passed him she noticed the driver of the white van had his right hand outside the window resting on the door, a mobile phone wedged between his left shoulder and his ear and was driving with his left hand. Unfortunately for her, as she passed him she went through a "safety" camera.

She was given two choices, take three points on a clean licence (clean for over 20 years), or pay £70 to do a "offender re-education" course, she picked the course.

When on this course she had to explain why she was speeding, so she recounted the story and made the point of explaining the dangerous manor of the white van and how the camera did nothing to him. She was told that no, the "safety" camera would not catch the white van driver as he was under the limit, and (here's the surprising bit) that if he had been doing the same speed as her he still wouldn't have received points/re-education as "van and lorry drivers are allowed to exceed the posted limit by 10mph", she questioned this as she thought the teacher had been mistaken, but was told the same thing, and when she started suggesting that this was wrong was told to not be a trouble maker.

I'm hoping that someone in the knowledge would be able to let me know if this is true or if the teacher is wrong, as it sounds very strange to me.

How might that work then,

I know for a fact of a couple of artic drivers, who've been through the course offered versus points,

I personally would've said it had the wrong plate attached to the trailer me'self, and blamed a temp driver for leaving his number plate
tied on
still....

There has perhaps been some mistake in her recollection of what the teacher said? I can't believe that anyone that incompetent would have blagged their way into the job! laugh

Seriously, it sounds like the teacher was baffled and panicked when confronted with the revelation that speed camera vans can only ever catch safe driving, while allowing potentially dangerous mobile use (not to mention anything else) to go unseen. A speed camera is nothing more than that after all! It will never detect acts of poor driving as long as it's shamefully allowed to exist!!

Let's not forget that a speed camera will also get you if you exceed the speed limit to overtake, but will do nothing about the driver of the vehicle being overtaken who speeds up to 'stop you getting past'!

Simple: Don't speed up, just cause an accident. If everyone did this then they would remove speed cameras. Your death would not be in vain.

I've been done at 46 in a 40. Well, it was a 60 overall, but they changed the technology and can now catch us exceeding 40 in a single carraigeway.

They didn't alert us to the fact that they can catch truckers now on that particular piece of road, you know, to prevent us from speeding at the earliest available opportunity, but then the game is only about catching speeders and raising money, not preventing speeding.

confused

They'll have been able to catch you at that speed for years, maybe not by the means used this time, but they could have by other means so you knew the risks of travelling at that speed didn't you ?

You were unlucky there, right on the ACPO guideline for action! It's a pity it wasn't Von who caught you as I'm sure he would've understood that sometimes your speed can just creep up a little while you've been watching the road, eh Von?

Would love to know exactly how many rear end collisions occur when the car happily following a truck at 50mph doesn`t notice the sudden slowing to 40mph for a camera. A5 s/b just before the A444 junction being a case in point. Whats even more annoying is that the camera is about 200 yards before a dual carriageway. IMO it`s only there to make money from the newbies running to and from the freight hubs in Atherstone.

Isn't the 'bus's & coaches on motorways 70 mph'info in the highway code wrong ? I thought it was dropped to 62 or 65 mph a few years ago ?

The legal speed limit is still 70 but they must be fitted with 62 mph speed limiters.

I think this is the most likely case. The sort of person that would do the job of "re-education" (i.e. brainwashing) would not tolerate 'awkward' questions and would resort to hiding behind the power given to them and probably bluster any reason that comes to mind to justify the reason for their job (speed cameras).

Bit thread hijacking, but can <7.5 goods vans use the 3rd lanes of motorways?
What about >7.5 ton and cars towing caravans?

By 3rd lane you mean the right hand lane of motorways with 3 or more lanes.

Q1 Yes, if not drawing a trailer.
Q2 No, no vehicle drawing a trailer can do so.

Obviously above does not apply if directed to do so by uniformed constibule eg passing an obstruction in closed lanes 1/2 etc.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I'm just amused by the blatant desire to raise money over anythin else.

So now the trucks are running on that road at 40 (A446 near the Belfry) at the same speed as they can run on roads nearby in built up areas. The a446 is a wide, fast road.

Car drivers are getting frustrated, and on that road is a nice, downhill straight and 3 lane wide piece of road governed by solid double white lines to prevent overtaking downhill.
Car drivers are succumbing to temptation and overtaking lines of traffic, as oncoming traffic is overtaking uphill.

A camera might be useful there, as it could possibly save lives, but it wouldn't raise much money.
