This guy had SORN'ed it too. Council is saying it's not necessary to check with DVLA. B*stards.
Would they do that with potentially rare and valuable cars?
Mine isn't particularly valuable in the grand scheme of things but it's relatively scarce and it would be a huge shame for it to be crushed or sold off for a pittance at some auction.
Seems stupid to not make enquiries as to the owner of a vehicle that is suspected abandoned.

Unbelievable... if they follow their procedures properly you have no recourse for compensation even if the car is legally off-road.
How on earth can this happen?

Yes you do. If they make a mistake and you suffer a loss, you can sue. JUST because they claim they are immune doesn't mean they are. If the car is legally off the road they are not entitled to do what they are doing.
I would personally be looking to prosecute (theft and/or criminal damage) and would ask them to show me all procedures followed to ensure they weren't acting negligently with respect of this position. For anyone to claim they don't have to check if the vehicle is SORN'd I would suggest they will be paying out compensation left right and centre if that is their idiotic viewpoint.
My local council (Rushmoor) states the following on their web site for once a car has been reported as abandoned....
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
We will:
On highways or other public areas:
* Place a 7-day notice to the owner of our intention to remove the vehicle
* Within 3 days of expiry of the notice we will re-visit and arrange removal
On private land within 3 days of the report:
* Notify the land owner of our intentions to remove the vehicle
* After 15 days if no objection is received we will place a 7-day notice on the vehicle (as above)
Abandoned vehicles which are considered hazardous on the first inspection will be removed by the end of the next working day.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I actually park on the road, so if, for example I went away for a 3 and half week trip (like I did earlier this year), or even a "normal" two week break, if someone engineered it, I could get home and find my car gone!!!!!!!!
This is similar to the letters you get threatening baliffs coming round - they give you 7 days to pay up, are posted a day after they're written and posted 2nd class so they get to you with 3 days left - if you're on holiday for 2 weeks......................

It looks as though he had parked it in someone else's private parking area. They seem to have reported it. I suppose he should have had asked permission to park there.

If it is on someone else's private land then of course it can be removed, the owner of the land is entitled to remove it or allow his agents to remove it.
That is totally different to having your car parked on your private land.

This also raises the further point then; if property is found, a wallet or watch, then you are obliged to hand it in to the authorities. I believe the rightful owner has 1 month to claim it before it is returned to the finder.
Why is this not done with cars?
Property has six months before being deemed as having no owner, and if found on Public Land must be handed in to the police or at the very least you must make strenous efforts to determine the rightful owner.
If found on private land, then you run the risk of knowing who owns it and therefore being guilty of theft. But if say it is your back garden and have no idea of who owns it then you can, IIRC, put up some notes around the area saying X has been found and if no-one collects then it is yours after about 28 days.
Bear in mind also that some objects if found (and deemed Treasure) need to be handed to Sec State anyways.

Deja vu or what!
I was ticketed in Croydon a few years back, having been taken ill and hospitalised. I appealed and due to a ticketting error by the warden, the Adjudicator said I should just pay the reduced penalty of £30, from memory, which I promptly did. Some months later I started getting letters from the County Court Bayliff about non-payment and no matter how many times I phoned the Council, they kept writing to say the amount was outstanding. Eventually I was sent a letter telling me that goods to the value (including costs of several £000s) would be removed from my possession within the next seven days, by force if necessary. Unfortunately I was going away on holiday the following day and wouldn't be there to defend my property. The council insisted I bring to their offices at my own expense, a copy of the ticket and a copy bank statement to prove payment. Having better things to do, I nonetheless drove the 40 miles to Croydon but was unable to find anywhere near to park, so I dumped the car right outside the Town Hall offices and went in to give the council a piece of my mind. I emerged to see a warden writing out a further ticket and became utterly incensed when I noticed him grinning at me and shaking his head. I'm a normally mild mannered and polite person but I was so furious I unleased the most violent tirade of verbal invective it's possible to imagine, I gave him a very frank opinion of what I thought of his employer, their practices, their lack of competence, and indeed my very low opinion himself. Effs, cees, bees you name it I said it, or rather spat it about one inch from his quivvering face. The poor little Hitler was visibly rocked back on his feet, he'd gone perfectly white in the face. I went wheelspinning out of the council drive, tyre smoke and 9000 rpm of Honda Vtec bouncing of council walls. They are complete bastards.
