A guy in my work let slip that he had let his MOT expire. Unfortunately all I could say is that it was bad - I was unable to justify why! Can anyone advise so I can let him know what may happen if he runs around without one?

He will be chained naked to a parking meter, and forced to say that Blair and Brown are his gay lovers and shaft him daily

Ministry of Transport Test Certificates are now (or should be) on a data base so detectection should be that little easier.

Using without can lead to a max fine of £1,000 or £2,500 if vehicle can carry more than 8 passengers. No points.

Common conception that no MOT invalidates Third Party Insurance - it doesn't.

Whilst no MOT does not automatically mean the presence of defects on a vehicle any found on a pull will be reported in addition to the base offence and could lead to a Prohibition on use Notice and points at Court.

You can use a vehicle without Test Certicate (and Excise Licence) to go to and return from a pre-booked Test.

Go to it now Tiger and astound your pals and get a free pint.

DVD, several people have asked in the past whether a still valid MoT certificate becomes null and void if the car fails an MoT test that was booked to take place in the tirty days allowed before the expiry of the current certificate. Is this the case, or not? Thanks.

Without a valid MOT he will not be able to buy a new tax disc. His insurance may also be invalid without a MOT.

As far as I am aware the MOT remains valid during the dates stipulated on the Certificate.

As mentioned if defects are present they can be reported and which can give rise to Prohibition Notice against use and requirement for vehicle re=tested for fitness.

As mentioned No MOT does not invalidate Third Party Insurance. (See Section 148 (1) (2) (b)Road Traffic Act 1988.) The other party will be paid out but a clause in the Insurance Policy may require owner to keep the vehicle in good mechanical condition. If this is breached then Insurance Company have a lever to take civil action against Policy Holder to recover their costs.

I was done twice when I was a student, First time got a producer for no seat belt then the trifling matter of the lapsed MOT caught their attention. They let me off that time. Second time got a producer for a tyre, went to court but they let me off quite lightly, less than £100 IIRC. I think I was quite lucky TBH. This was in 1999 ish though things may have changed since.

Neil

Yes I am currently MOT'd
