So went down to the post office to tax my recently purchased car. Computer says no - the taxation class on the new keeper supplement is 'disabled'. Apparently I cant just pay for a plg one, I have to have a v5 marked as plg first of all.

Now, I didnt notice this taxation class when I bought the car (the seller wasnt disabled, the car doesnt have any disabled person modifications, so i didnt think to look), so I didnt put any amendment on when I bought it. This means that once the v5 in my name arrives I will have to send it straight back to change the tax class, so figure what, 3 weeks minimum without tax.

What are buyers supposed to do in this situation? Even if I had noticed and amended the v5 at the time of purchase apparently I still couldnt retax it. The person in the post office said 'dont drive it'... thats a great suggestion, let me just go explain I cant come to work for a few weeks because the dvla computer system is biased for disabled people (apparently if I was disabled but the tax class was plg they could do it that way, but not the other way round)

Is there a local DVLA office in your area? I would have thought they could handle it for you.

nearest one is 1 1/2 hours away, no way im going to make a pointless drive into cityland to talk to dribbling muppets who wont be able to help anyway.

I guess what I really want to know is what approach the BiB will take - if i get pulled over and present them with my mot, certificate of insurance, new keeper supplement and explanation what is the textbook thing to do?

The offence is "Failing to display", and you're bang to rights.

Care to explain? if the system doesnt allow me to tax the car despite my efforts, how is that my fault?

Strict liability. Might be - I don't know, but you aren't displaying a valid tax disc, therefore "filing to display" seems to fit the bill.

Can't you apply for a disc by post to the Div'sLA~?

They would be well within their right to report you to DVLA for the offence for No Tax and also issue a FPN for failing to display. It would be for DVLA to authorise any further action on the No Tax part. On the other it would be a quewstion of refusing the FPN and electing Court where youyr excuse can be fully aired.

It seems to me that you should contact your local DVLA Office first by phone to see if they can help using Form V10 and the part V5 handed to you on purchase. If they can then a trip there may save a lot of hassle and allow you to get the registration of the vehicle corected (may be done through DVLA Local Office).

After all you are only trying to pay your dues.

That is isn't your fault doesn't stop YOU breaking the law by failing to display. That's not to say that a friendly copper *might* let you off after your explanation.

But don't bet on that.

After all, you are the most dangerous member of society and are targetted by the council and the police accordingly. You are, "motorist".

Sadly, you won't be able to drive that car legally, it is not the Govts fault and they wouldn't give a toss if it was. Simple really, they don't care. They don't care how long it takes you to get a V5 etc.. and they don't care you can't use your car. They don't even care that your taxes pay their wages.

And yet if you try and report someone driving a car with a 6 month out of date tax disk, neither the local police nor the DVLA are interested.

Just spoke to the DVLA advice people on the subject, after fighting the inevitable menu system.

I can post all my usual stuff needed to tax the car along with a v62 form to change the tax class to my 'local' dvla office, and they will post me back a tax disc in due course, about 3-5 days turnaround.

That means that it should come back before the leeway period is up, and I hope that any police I encounter in the meantime will accept that explanation

All in all not so bad. I thought i was going to have to do the lovely trip to the dvla office.

or if you don't want to wait, you just take the docs to the office, and they'll do it there and then.
i did this when i changed a car from PLG to historic, and i even got a cheque off them for the tax i'd already bought.

Yep I did this when I bought a car that was disabled (ex-motability, bought from auction by dealer and sold to me). Went to tax it and had to go to local DVLA. Easy to do if you can get to local DVLA!

hehehehehehehehe

and as for 'jasandjules' comment that 'it is not the Govts fault' - who the heck do you think DVLA are? ie just renew your tax disc online the web address is:
www.direct.GOV.UK/taxdisc - get the bit about GOV.UK?
