Interesting account with the police.....I think!!!
Discussion
Took my Griff to work today, on the way back (bout 23:00) i was driving along a dual carriageway well below the speed limit. A car comes right up behind me, i could nt see his head lights driving aggresively. So i acccelerate a bit and pull off the carriageway along a B road. The car follows me again right up my my back. Bearing in mind i know the road very well its not residential i accelerate and over take the car in front (the only car) and slow down again. Next thing the car (metallic red Mondeo estate 04 plate) that was following me is right up behind me with blue lights flashing!!!!! I pull over, he pulls across the front of my car just missing it. Three blokes get out wearing civies and shoulder holsters. I get out, the driver, middle aged starts having a go at me, a real go. Saying iam a danger on road, iam going to lose my licence, the car is to fast for me etc etc He gets a pad out takes my name and address, then says i think you have learnt your lesson they get back in the car and go!!!!!!!!
So now iam thinking were they police or just blokes pulling me over to take the pi** or get my details so to come and steal my car and stuff. Or is that what the police do nowa days entice you so they can pull you over and then just put you down in front of there mates????????

i had something similar a while back. the approaching lights went from red to amber as i came to them, pulled away a bit sharpish, to 30mph. the car sitting at the lights were plain clothes coppers.
they pulled me straight away, i got out the car, polite as always as i knew i had not done anything wrong and they started verbally laying into me. of course as i knew they didn;t have a leg to stand on, i gave them as good as they got. a real slanging match, as they were being extremely rude. once i said, i was going to report them for their behaviour they got back in their car and drove off.
i guess they were just having a bad day.

Sounds very odd, maybe not road policing or front line police officers hence the poor driving, the pulling in front off you instead of a rear fend off and then when they got their pad out they realised they had no idea what to do next...
(No offence meant to other non front line officers who do know their onions !)
....or of course it was a hoax, would be good to keep an eye out for the index should any other PH'r have a similar experience.
P.S Bit of a myth about a plain car with plain clothes officers not being able to stop you - you might be able to claim a defence to your "fail to stop" but there is no "you must be uniformed or the car marked" law out there.

Just as a follow up to this, i called in a few favours from friends in low places. They were the police who pulled me over, in fact they are robbery squad. The guy who had a go at me is well known for his aggresive behaviour toward the public. When he was asked about the incident with my car he said 'the di*k should nt be driving a flash car' Which is nice
I realise not all police are the same, but its these incidents that give them a bad name and morons like him dont even realise what there doing. So if you happen to get pulled over in the Middlesex area by Dc Gavin ******** who is driving a 04 Mondeo Estate wish him well from me.

I do hope you are going to write to the Chief Constable detailing this event and the comments from that nice policeman?

And I'd get DVD to confirm/deny that as well. AFAIK, various pieces of legislation give rights to a constable in uniform to stop a vehicle (to stop people on foot, a constable does not have to be in uniform, but must show their warrant card). I have seen text along the lines of: "police have the power to stop any vehicle, provided that they are readily identifiable by either vehicle or uniform", but can find no authorities for the 'identifiable by vehicle' bit - Streaky Edited by streaky on Sunday 8th October 18:41

I thought the law specifically said "you most stop for a uniformed officer" but doesn't define what uniformed is.
Dealing with the incident posted only and without going into the powers of HATO, CSO, VOSA, SOCA then:
Section 163 RTA 1988
Person driving a mpv on a road MUST STOP the vehicle on being required to do so by a constable IN UNIFORM.
Whilst the word Constable covers every BIB up to C.C. the word uniform appears to be one that has to be decided by the bench. If the constable can be easliy identified from his/her manner of dress as a police officer, the requireemtn has probably been met [Wallwork v Giles(1970)] - not wearing hat - held uniform.

Write to the chief constable.
At the very least ask him WTF were three armed gentlemen doing in such a situation. Also ask him to explain their aggressive and dangerous driving. Ask for a copy of the video (if they had one in car) etc.. and ask for the CPS to be given access.
Sounds very much like they just were upset that you had a nicer car than them.

Better also ask that the local police don't make a 'special' note of your car/reg. and stop you at every opportunity!

I think when he says shoulder holsters he may mean the covert harnesses that Police use to carry radio/CS/stick etc, because they're out of uniform they can't really carry it hidden around their waists. There's no way a Divisional 'Squad' would be carrying firearms. Perhaps he can clarify for us?
My brother once 'mouthed off' a driver who made a comment about his lack of indication whilst negotiating a mini roundabout (no excuse but he'd had a very bad day).
Said car gave chase (my bruv in his knackered old escort diesel van) and did a sweeney style stopping mavoeuvre on him. Three blokes got out of the car and my brother thought he was going to get the pasting of his life - turned out they were plain closed coppers and they gave him a polite ticking off and sent him on his way - he has NEVER done it again!
Lesson well and truly learnt!
