I've got a silly idea, but I thought I'd run it past the SP&L folks first..

Is it legal to wear a helmet whilst driving a car on the public road?

Ta..

No, you need traditional muslim dress for that.

Nope I wear one with the Atom

If it were in a closed car I imagine you may get more attention but I don't believe it is illegal.

Slinky,

I have seen a caterham driver using one of those helmets. Looks well cool. Getting one myself :-)

Once saw a chap touring Scotland in a vintage 3-litre Bentley whilst wearing a Wing Commander Bigglesworth type leather flying helmet.

Comment from the pavement was "How to look an utter prat.... and yet get away with it completely."

most definately not!

aircraft bone domes are designed for a totally different criteria than car/bike crash helmets, and will not protect your bonce to nearly the same degree as a proper helmet.

is it really worth the risk just for the look?

I think the lid (in this case) is more to stop bugs and stones etc from hurting like a hurty thing when travelling at more than walking pace, rather than offering full bonce protection.

I drove in a hailstorm with the roof down once. Not deliberately, just it used to take me ages to get the lid on the S and I thought if I drove quick enough I would be ok, which I was, until I got to the traffic lights........

I have seen plenty of people driving vintage cars with the vintage biggles look so I can't see it being illegal.

Definitely not illegal to wear a helmet, so long as it doesn't stop you being able to see the road.

Bee strike at anything over 20mph is painful...stones are worse!

not concerned about bonce protection, other than from the elements, conkers falling out of trees etc etc...

Just thought it would be a bit of fun... (and would also serve as entertaining head gear for riding our new pit transport next season...)

Same here... I wanted a StarWars tie-fighter helmet when driving the aeroscreened 7. Just need to make sure the vizor is stoneproof (Hence I wear Oakley M-Frames as they are proven to be shotgun proof)

Gritters might be painful, but at least it's nice and warm behind them. I do the same behind buses sometimes when I can no longer feel my face*. The clouds of particulate ridden fumes do a great job of thawing me out. The only time I've worn a helmet in the Westy was on a sub zero rainy trip from Huddersfield to Anglesey, and then only 'til the rain changed to drizzle.
