Hi All,

As on the news section of the Topgear website, a man has been fined for throwing a cigarette out of his car window in Warwickshire..

Apparently he was fined £100 by the council and it says he got a criminal record for it.

Well gang, i think the criminal record bit may be a bit harsh for a 1st offence but as a reformed smoker my first reaction is that £100 fine is right as both in my TVR and on my bike i've had lit fag ends bounce off the car / bike.

I'm sure opinions will be split on this..

So gang, what do you think??? Good Fine?? Bad Fine??

Cheers,

Nick

Good. I've had fag ends hit the car by the cabin air intake and been able to smell them inside the car.

Bloody good thing too!

Number of times, I had fag ash or fag ends hit me when on the bike.

I'm not sure he can get a criminal record if it's an administrative penalty (PCN) handed out by the council, rather than a conviction in a magistrate's court.

That did seem a bit odd but i'm just relaying how it was told on the Topgear site..

i was watching a programme this morning re the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire, they think that it was started with a discarded cigarette that caught fire after it got sucked into the air filter of the lorry that started it all off.

now that makes you think..

Saying that it is effectively like throwing a lit match out the window, except it doesnt get extinguised by the wind...

"Smoking is a dangerous habit and that's just been proved by a Warwickshire man who's been fined for throwing a cigarette out of his car window.

North Warwickshire Borough Council has decided to release the name of the man as a further punishment because it believes the £100 fine he received was not enough. "

Looks like a court judgement - how else could they publish his name ??

Not being cynical , but how many pedestrians and cyclists will we now see getting fined ?

I don't want to seem alarmist but could that be a cause of the many lorry fires (and cars) we seem to have on the motorways?

I have seen a number of modern cars like a Renualt Scenic, Seat Leon, Golf MK3 on fire this year and thought it strange to see such new cars going up in smoke. That said, the french are known for dodgy electrics, the Seat was Max Powered (the amp for the subwoofer probably went bang!) but the golf looked standard..

Colour me skeptical on that one. Strikes me that the worst that could happen is the engine sucks burn bits of air filter in. Imagine how much air is being inducted, its like a monster hoover in there.

That may be being a touch alarmist but at the end of the day if you are throwing lit things in the path of vehicles containing lots of highly flammable fuel and other combustable materials, it certainly doesn't decrease the risk!!!!

Lets face facts, you dont go round someones house and throw a lit 'fag' on top of the boiler or on the sofa..

I think all of you who think its ok for this guy to have been fined should be shot....
I always throw my fag ends out of the window as the ashtray is full of coins and stuff, It's always a bonus when you manage to hit an unsuspecting motorcyclist or get one to bounce up the the front of a car behind.
If it wasn't for us smokers those nice men who push dustcarts around wouldn't have half as much to do thus resulting in more redundancies and more tax payers money being paid to support them and their families.

I agree, you shopuldn't throw fags out of a car window. But look where we are now:

leave bin out on wrong day - fine
eat apple in car - fine
put junk mail in litter bin - fine

Mug Granny - unlikely to get caught.

Its just breeding more and more control freakery and jobs-worthiness. Not conducive to a sharing caring or innovative society

Yep i see your point and as a whole totally agree with you. They have gone too far (understatement of the next millenium) with the 'fine' culture.

Though occasionally they get it right, and prosecuting someone for lobbing 'fags' out of their car window is a rare occasion where the punishment fits the crime..

The others you say, i agree, are just totally bonkers!!!

Great idea, they could also have handcarts to put the bodies of the anti-dimp infidels on too. hehe
