In a nutshell....son is travelling down to Newcastle to view, and probably purchase a car.

However, the car is untaxed. Insurance is in place (but cover note is not yet available) Car has a current MOT.
Being a Sunday it will be impossible to buy the tax at a local Post Office.

If he drives it home and gets stopped on the way back what will be the consequences?

He has considered taxing the car on-line at the sellers home, but again IIRC, the tax disc will be sent to the sellers home (has to go to registered keeper - and DVLA won't have recieved notification of change of owner) and son will have to wait for the disc to be sent to his address.

I know it's wrong to drive the car untaxed and it's not as though he's trying avoid paying...thoughts or advice please.

Likely scenario:

So the son of jitb purchases said car and gets receipt with date on and sets off back to the land of heather.

Along comes Northumbria's finest, pulls and notices No Excise Licence so if Son of jitb cannot convince him with the fact and evidence of recent purchase and in possession of all the docs necessary and an assurance that Licence will be obtained the next day, he may report for No ExCise Licence. Back to the Station and before completing his shift he will submit a Form Cle2/1 which is transmitted next day by Plod admin down to DVLA. But before it is received at DVLA son of jitb has taxed the vehicle first thing Monday. Lo and behold DVLA on checking their records see the vehicle is taxed. NFA.

But also if said Plod is after performance fiqures he may also report son for failing to display a current Excise licence which could be a FPN for 30 notes I believe.

Now I would like to think in this instant that there are good plods and seeing the apparent honesty of son may well accept the assurance of tax next day and let him go on his way providing there are no other records elsewhere of vehicle/driver.

Thanks DVD

Hoping that if the worst happens, common sense will prevail.

As an aside, just looked at DVLA's site and checked the potential new car's details, in the "date of liability" section it has September 2007. I assume that this is the date the tax is due? However, the cars tax expired Aug 2006....DVLA's database is not up to date?
Would I also be right in thinking that whatever the BiB use in their cars to detect untaxed cars (if anything at all) would registar this car as taxed?...Again, I'd emphasise that son JitB has no intention of avoiding his obligations!

Thanks, J
