Parking ticket - same as Tennis?
Discussion
Got a lovely parking ticket yesterday for not parking within the marked bay. On street parking with council parking attendants in long bays.
My wheels were overlapping the outside of the marked bay ie the width. Part of the rear tyre was in, part on and part over the line. (295mm tyres) The car is 1830mm wide.
I had parked about 110mm (4.5 inches) from the curb, so not to overlapp the pavement with my wingmirror or to clip and damage my wheels on the curb.
So yes I could have got a bit closer in, about 2 inches but as in Tennis if its on the line is it in?
I have written to appeal to the council first. I suspect that the width of the bay is narrower than my car taking into account the wing mirrors.
So do they measure if your in by your tyres or the wingmirrors/overhangs of the car.
Views or pointers to any specific legislation on how wide bays are required to be and how to measure the offending vehicle would be appreciated.
Regards

I had a tickt in similar circumstances in London. Parked a motorcycle (both weels in a bay) used the side stand (wholly in the bay) and was ticketed for overhanging outside the bay (bike on a slant, see?). I overhung 6" of space from the line edging the bay to a curb, containging rubbish not swept up that morning. Appeal turned down. I gave up and contributed £40 I am sure was not due.

sounds like I'm stuffed

Thank you.
So it looks like the bay should be 2700mm but may be reduced to a min of 1800 depending on the width of the road/traffic.
Sounds like a tape measure job for me.
But is crux is being on the line in or out? overlapping in/on and out all at the same time!
Any regs on this? or down to if its sunny or what breakfast they had that day
I will post a pic when I get home which i took at the time.
The bays are not marked out exactly like that, mine having a broken line along the whole length of the bay (length ways) and no dividing lines seperating the bays.
Not being as prescribed in the 1032 sch6 road marking - does this make them invalid? (presume as they are Directions they are for guidence only and some variation will be allowed?)

Yes, this would make it invalid, if it's not a properly marked bay

That diagram says "marked with individual spaces". There may be another diagram not so marked.

Well if it were 1800mm and your car is 1830mm wide plus 4.5 inches from the curb then it would not fit by some margin therefore it is unlikely that the bay is under 1800...
It does make parking a bit more difficult for people who've bought an unusually wide car. They don't know the width of the parking space until they've parked and found it doesn't fit. Then they have to move and find another space which may again be too narrow. That's life.

I would go back with a tape measure and a camera.
Regardless of your road position, my way forward would be to see if the bay was a centimetre too small and thus unenforcable.

Exactly, also make sure that the signage is correct, and that the painted white lines are laid down precisely as required in the law.

Hey Guess what??
Mister tape measure was out tonight. Took a sample of 2 measurements the first where I parked and the 2nd 10 meters up the road.
The outside edge of the bay from the curb varies from: (width of line is 4 cm.
174cm inside edge of the line
178 outside edge of the line
(where I parked)
and
177cm inside edge of the line
181cm outside edge of the line
So its smaller than the minimum standard, and I could not have parked there without overlapping the line in any event.

Good ground for a challange?? Photo taken immediatly on finding ticket.
