A Notice of Intended Prosecution arrived yesterday morning for 51 in a 40 on the 14th at 07:20 in Tower Hamlets. I live in Surrey and the car was on my drive. To me it's obvious that someone is using my plate but how do you prove this.

I've phoned the Met and they have asked me to return the NIP with a covering letter.

Have any of you had this happen to you and is there anything I should be aware of.

Ask for the photograph, and if it was not you then report it to the Police.

In all likelihood they will continue to chase you for the cash

Report it to the police now and not in a few weeks, NIP is simply a letter that they want to prosecute u, they hope u will pay up and accept it, they can of course take you to court...

Do as the plod asks and give a covering letter that car was at such a place from some time to this time

Same happened to me just over a year ago. I was worried since the NIP was for a number of offences including failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
In the space on the NIP asking for the driver details I wrote "None - PTO" On the reverse I wrote a little letter stating that the car was locked in my garage at the time, and had been all week. Never heard anything since.
I did hear on the local radio a while later that someone had been prosecuted for a hit & run, on the same date & location as my NIP refered to. I am guessing now, but did a witness get most of a reg number and the police send NIP's to all similar reg numbers in this part of the country just in case someone owned up?

Thanks for the responses guys.

This looks like a camera job so I have done as advised and written the letter and asked for the photograph.

Always handy to have something "unique" on your car - like a
PH sticker or something.

Although, on another recent case here it was a moped or bike as opposed to a car - so that was quite clearly not the same vehicle!
