Son passed his test a couple of years ago, now he has to produce his doc's at the police station and can't find his full licence, only his provisional and his pass certificate. Is there a duration after passing a test that you have to get a full licence? Rich...

It's two years. If you don't claim your full licence within that time you will have to retake your test.

I think the time limit for exchange is 1 year and not 2 years.
I cannot fingd any information on this so I may be wrong but I have an idea that I am not.

That would suggest to me that he has never applied for a full licence if he still has both provisional and certificate of competence. Had he done so, DVLA would have kept his pass certificate and provisional to send him a full licence in replacement.
If he has not exchanged them within 1 year for a full licence, I think he may be in for a shock!

Taken from the DVLA site: -
Once you have passed your driving test (theory and practical) you should exchange your test pass certificate for a new licence as soon as possible. If you do not claim your test pass within 2 years of the date of your test, the entitlement conveyed by the test pass will be lost and you will have to pass a further driving test (theory and practical) for that category of vehicle if you wish to have it included on your driving licence.

Thanks guys, sounds like he has a major shock coming his way... p.s. he lived with my ex-wife i.e. his mum since he was 10 which is why I don't chase him up on these things every day, mind you at 20 years old one would think he would be able to get his arse in gear and apply for a full licence when he passed his test 2 and a bit years ago !!! God when will the agrevation kids cause ever cease! Rich...

Wasn't it the first thing most of us did when we passed our tests. I certainly popped down the post office and got the form the next day. I wanted to swop the provisional one for my full one asap.

You never know this could be a good kick up the arse for him. It will be interesting to see what happens on the insurance when they ask "how long have you had your licence", answer "six months, well it's really three years, but I forgot / was too lazy to get a full one when I passed". Hmm, they might just give him the six months I think, cue raised premiums for a while as he gets classed as a brand new driver - lovely.

Tell me about it!!! I sometimes despair of him. As you say the first thing I did was throw away the L plates, have a blast up the M4 to heston services to "see what it would do" (about 75mph as it happens in a 1955 MG ZA) and swap my licence for the full job. I honestly don't understand his mind. Rich...

If he is not careful he may end up with a charge of 'driving without a licence for the class of vehicle' or whatever the wording is.

It won't. But eventually you can get your own back when the collapse of the welfare state means they have to fund your geriatric healthcare

[serious mode]As far as I can ascertain, your son crashed while drug-driving and unlicensed. Solicitor ? [/serious mode]

Thankfully no one else was involved with no damage to anything else other than a few gouges in the ditch he rolled into. Plenty of agrevation for me though... Solicitor? possibly... to ensure that he gets locked-up for his own protection. R... end of subject eh?
