No doubt I am resurrecting a thread.
After a recent trip to Nodnol I am amazed at how militant the Lane 2 hogs have become.
I gave one a gentle flash to remind him he's not on a DC and I get all sorts of grief whan I pass in lane 3.
I am so tempted to pass in Lane 1, or sit behind with lights and horns going or even to cut them up changing from L3 to L2 and L1.
I won't do this however because I am a better person and 2 wongs don't make a right etc etc...
Are these people scared to change lanes?
Do they think Lane 1 is for wagons only?
If I come across one of these plonkers going less that 60 when I have my carrotvan then I cannot pass them, same I guess as the commercial drivers.
What does plod do?
Should we adopt lane driving like the US?
Is it time for a roof mounted RPG?

Oh come on, this sort of behaviour MUST be perfectly safe, because it's not picked up by speed cameras.

pass them quietly in lane 1 so as not to wake them. I believe that technically this is not undertaking (as mentioned in previous threads) although it may be construed as driving without due care and attention.
The other thing which is just as obvious which is approach in lane one as normal, and when you get to where you would undertake, indicate out and go all the way out to lane three, and when you have passed indicate all the way back again to lane one.
I would say that had a 30% success rate of getting them to move over when they 'realise' they were falling asleep/inconveniencing all the other road users.
I am always astonished though that 70% of the time you can appraoch the car in lane one and they are blissfully unaware, you are forced to visibly overtake all the way around and then cut back in to lane one just in front of them and this still does not register with them that something is wrong...
My other related comment to this is regard to lane one hogs... I shall explain.
Back in my dark teenage years I worked weekends in a shopping centre in Bristol, and my mate and I shared the driving for the 20 mile trip down there. The trip involved 20 miles on the motorway and 10 miles on the NSL single carriageway A38 - before they put speed cameras and 30 zones along it I might add!
One Sunday afternoon on our jaunt back from work on the A38 with my mate driving we approached a typical 'Sunday driver' who insisted on doing twenty miles an hour below the speed limit. Not unusual to see this, and not too much of a problem since if they adopt the correct road position the A38 is so wide in most places you could overtake without even crossing the centre line.
However this guy was different - as well as driving 20mph below the speed limit he also took every effort to make sure we could not overtake - he would drive the correct road position through the corners but as soon as a straight opened up he would move out into the lane as close to the white line as he dared. As well as it making it difficult to get round his car to overtake this also meant that my mate could not see 'around' his car to overtake. After about 3 or 4 miles of this we were just astonished.
However, we were not as astonished as him and his passenger - and something which proved how wide the single lane carriageway is, and how far out he was when he looked to his *left* to see his standard 40mph driving being undertaken at 43mph.
I might add that this was not when I was driving, and this is such a bizarre circumstance to get such a bad driver with such a wide road, but in any case its an interesting story but I wouldnt recommend it!

In a similar vein I was "blocked" by a National Express coach who moved out to straddle two lanes of the A606 dual carriageway just to stop me overtaking about 600 yards before it became single again. Makes you wonder what goes through these people's minds...
I do hope you simply saw your gap, dropped it a cog and overtook him anyway.
Another pet hate is the driver who accelerates when you are mid overtake on a single carriageway. A scammer would get you if you exceded the limit to complete your manoevre, but do nothing whatsoever to detect and punish the dangerous driver who accelerated whilst being overtaken.
This is a reason why speed enforcement alone is so wrong, and has little to do with road safety.

But what do you do when, as in a case I experienced, the perp is a dopy bint in a 4X4 who is so determined not to be overtaken and is swerving about so much that she is on the verge of popping up onto two wheels.
Dropping a cog is the last thing that should be done as opposed to what actually happened.
Which was...........
..... hanging back and arranging it so that she gets reported on summons.
I was off to heathrow yesterday morning and managed to drive virtually all the way from the M3 to the new T5 junction on the M25 in lane 1 or 2 undertaking all the way .. the lanes were virtually clear whilst everyone else queued up at 60 in the right-hand lanes.
I'm convinced these people are actually asleep at the wheel.

I understand that if you are in slowed traffic then you can pass either side as each lane moves in a jam, so what (if any) is the maximum speed for a jam?
As the rpevious poster said, if lanes 2 to 4 are filled with plebs asleep at 60 mph then who's to say that it's not a rolling jam?
Hows about keeping a can of silly string in your car and spraying a lane 2 hog when you pass in lane 1?

if you or I were to be caught "undertaking" (which lets admit is going to be highly unlikely) I would defend myself by saying that I was in the correct lane when the L2 hog slowed down which made it look like I was undertaking.......
M4 has loads of L2 hogs and they all dont give a toss about anyone except themselves, I flashed them, passed them in L1, moved across all three lanes and back in again (IMO the most "dangerous" passing technique) and they have still carried on blindly ignorant of their road position.
More Police on the motorways who can pull these people over the better. Then again they will probably spot the BiB and move into L1 until they pass and then move back into L2!!!!

There is nothing in law which prohibits using lane 1 for 'undertaking'. Providing you are not weaving in and out of traffic then you are very unlikely to get a 'tug' for pulling this move.
I do it every time I'm on the motorway and am pleasantly surprised how many drivers move to lane 1 once they've been 'undertaken'.

Is there any particular demographic for L2 hogs?
Is it the domain of the ditzy blonde and the mobile retirement home?
Well fellow PH'ers I'm due for another trip on the M4 tomorrow.
Let's see how many eejits I happen upon.
Off to replenish spike dispenser and fill my oilslick tank.
Starting to think I should have gone for a white Volvo T5.
