My girlfriend showed me something in todays (I think it was todays) daily mail. Just a small article.

Now before I start, I must admit I dont read this section of PH and am not that knowlegable on the subject of the plod and the law.

Aaaaaanyways, here's what happened. A bloke was giving it some welly down the motorway, and was doing 140mph. He outran the cops, and then stopped on the roadside for them, and was arrested for speeding excessively.

The article makes no mention of anything like carying a gun, drugs, kidnapped person or suchlike... just the fact that he was speeding. And the angle of the article was to skoff with surprise at the fact that the car in question was a skoda... The article went on to quote someone from skoda commenting on the car's ability.

But, what was going through my mind was the fact that the guy is getting a minimum of 1 year in prison and probably a 10 year ban.

As i said, I dont know *that much* about how suitable or appropriate penalties are, but... given that lots of people here have done 140, on occasion... isn't this sentance WAY out of whack?

If the penalty were the norm, none of us would ever dare to go anywhere near that speed. Am i right - or is this kind of penalty the norm?

Out of whack? More like off the bleedin planet, for a speeding charge.

However was the driver being charged for other things like not pulling over when the blue lights and siren were put on? undertaking or using the hardshoulder etc?

It wasn't just a simple case of speeding:

Seems pretty fair, under the circs. Aren't we always complaining that imbeciles aren't kept off the road.

Still, gave them a chance to recycle the Skoda gags. And they're so accurate these days:

Saw 2 BiB last week in a black Octavia RS. They were in uniform but parking in the Dentist car park, so it may have been a private car belonging to the driver.

May have been something to look out for in Leicestershire though......

I am surprised it is only 12 months, with his record it should have been longer.

travelling at double the limit in a stolen car in heavy rain with a lifetime ban? of course he should get sent down. dont suppose he was insured or anything? in my view a year isnt enough and he got off lightly

Let me guess, he parked his car through a shop window during a ram raid?

Cant think of any other way to do it, unless it was the guy who parked his car inside a police station....

I agree with what paolow said, the bloke should go down for longer. He will be out of the nick after one year and will be done by the police within a month.

I would say lock the F****R's up for life but why should we (the tax payer) pay for these people to have TV's, pool tables and so on. Bad enough that we have to pay for the roof over there heads and the food they eat?
