Buying an untaxed car
Discussion
The old catch 22 I'm afraid, and I want to check I've got things right! (Fingers crossed.)
I've bought a car, with no tax (I think it's currently SORN) from a dealer. They have provided a 7 day cover with somebody who has tried to quote me happy.
I need to get tax before I can take the car off the dealer - can I buy 12 months tax with only a 7 day cover note?
The dealer says yes - I think it's going to be difficult, espescially as the post office is usually full of incompetent old duffers.
I've also just paid for 12 months cover, effective from thursday when I'll be picking up the car...but I don't have the paperwork for that yet - and probably won't until the weekend.

Cant see why not. AFAIK you just have to prove the car is insured on the day you apply for the tax?
I know Ive gone to the Post Office on a couple of occassions to get tax using a full insurance certificate that ran out the following day, no problem.

Many thanks Fubar, I need to have a check on post office site I guess...or the DVLA, but I thought somebody on here might well know.
The insurance company quoted me (happy - pah!) £934, but I've got covered for £402 (25 year old male with 0 NCB - my first insurance) with a 55 plate poverty spec Ka.

This is standard fare I think these days. For some reason, you seem to need to have your own insurance for thhe dealer to get tax rather than the dealer's. So the dealer has a deal with an ins co to give you a week's free ins cover. They use the cover note to get the tax for you, you decide whether to carry on with the ins or get your own. That worked very well when I bought a new car recently. The dealers have to rely on you to get an ins cover note to them for them to tax it for you otherwise. That's a very unreliable process.

PS if you are contemplating anyone quoting you happy for perm car ins, then I urge you not to!
This is exactly what I did. I bough the car off a dealer, got 7-days free insurance, was able to use the insurance certificate printed off at the dealer's premises along with the V5 and MOT certificate to tax the car at the Post Office round the corner while the car was getting a pre-delivery inspection.

My gf was refused car tax on one of my cars recently (Post Office), but I can't remember whether it was because the MOT or Insurance had less than a month left ? It was one of them.
That should not happen, and I should know, used to run a sub PO with my wife, and we issued tax discs.
oh grief road tax
having loads of problems as detailed in this thread if anyone knows if there is a solution would be good to know on here

Just to say that this did work out fine in the end, although I had a *MAJOR* panic about 6am today when I decided to check on the V5 if it was registered as a mobility type car...in which case I wouldn't be able to tax it, but my panic was undue as the nice young lady in the post office taxed it with little bother (although she did ask to see the "proper" insurance certificate, as I only had a 7 day cover note...but she was quite happy when I explained the reason that I had the cover note was to buy tax - and that there was a certifate in the post).
All in all, a result - could have been far more trouble.
