I was travelling east bound on the M4 on saturday (11th Nov) about 12.30pm and i spotted 3 cameras on top of one of the bridges between Bath J18 and Chippenham J17 on tripod stands, one for each lane, were they speed cameras or surveillance cameras?!

Anyone else see them and know what they were?

I've blasted past 1 set of these cameras on the Devon Express way once.....I was doing 90 yikes

I never heard anything.....although the car was registered to my dad at the time, so he could have been kind and took it on the chin for me....I doubt it though

I "think" they might be ANPR camera's.

ANPR hey... Could well have been looking at a photo on the web of them...
But if that's the case then why would they be there?!

They had some of these on the M5 just before Exeter on Saturday evening too as I was heading down to Plymouth. You'll be fine as they're ANPR

We saw them on Sunday on the way back from Weston. I think they were APNR cameras.

Phew, that's a relief then if you're right as i was driving the Mrs car and she would have got the speeding ticket had they been speed cameras, so i would have been in big trouble ;o)

They've had these out over the M4 in Newport & Cardiff, too. Deffo APNR.

The same set up was on a bridge between 14 & 15 yesterday, looking at traffic going west.
I'm not sure that they are speed detection units though.
If they were, and it went to court, surely the BiB wouldn't be able to provide the documentation to satisfy the calibration of the installation?
I would suggest they are gathering data to justify a permanant installation at a later date.

So what are they using these cameras for?
Tax disc checking or does this mean they are planning on turning the M4 into a toll road?!

Yeah, went past those the other day and had a slight worry - then quickly realised what they were and went on my merry way. Sneaky positioning and a bit of a nightmare, but if it gets the uninsured off the roads its a good thing....
