Just wondering which rules would be broken by this? Say if the driver did not exceed the limit and was in full control (arguably wobble ) I guess the same undertaking rules apply, or do they differ? What if the driver using the lay by to get pass, say a really slow moving vehicle, has enough space and a fast enough car to be able to pull into the lay-by, stop and then accelerate out in front of it?

Sounds like a probable careless driving charge if observed by plod.

Strangely enough this happens literally outside Warrington police station. There is a single lane carriageway where you must turn right to drive around the back of the police station and get access to some roads. As the route is also a busy main through road there is oftn someone there waiting to turn right.

There is not enough room to get past unless you go half and half onto a layby which is conveniently placed exactly where the cars stop to turn right.

I have often though the same, but then I have also seen BiB doing exactly the same thing.

There's a layby south west of Milton Keynes which is marked as a "passing bay" or words to that effect, goodness only knows what would happen if you tried to use it to undertake somebody and hit them, it's pretty short and barely long enough to gat past a stationary vehicle let alone a moving one. I think it's to let traffic past stationary trucks waiting to turn right, but there's nothing explicitly saying that.

I saw this done on the single carriageway A58 heading out of Wetherby. A tractor was leading a line of vehicles and I was about sixth from the front of the queue. From somewhere behind me a car dived into a layby on the left, whizzed through the layby and re-joined the main road comfortably in front of the tractor. I was thought it was a bit of smart thinking by the driver and quite amusing at the time.

The layby was quite wide and it was separated from the road by a wide grass verge. OK it looked like a bit of a cheeky move, but it worked out perfectly well and I don't see that a police officer should really have found much fault with it.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Do you live near Hounslow?

Or possibly Bamford.

(Or doubtless any of many other places.)

For some reason, it really annoys me when I see people doing that.

For some reason, it really annoys me when I see people doing that.

We have a local petrol station where the forecourt is used by people trying to avoid a no right turn ban.

Putting aside the risk to petrol station customers due to vehicles whizzing through the smallish forecourt, it brasses off the owner intensely. He has often declared how he would like to lob something through open sunroofs.

I have to say that, much as I am opposed to DVLA giving out details, see my supermarket car park thread, if I were owner I'd be tempted to put some clear notices up, get some ANPR cameras up and set the knuckle draggers onto non customers.

All accusations of double standards fully accepted but will be ignored. hehe

Just outside romsey there is a turning alongside a layby as described, or at least there was until a few weeks ago. It was used every morning by hundreds of cars to undertake people slowing to turn, including by police cars that have followed me through!

The council have taken the hint now, extended the layby and moved the lines so there is an 'official' right turn lane and straight through lane.

Shame in the process they made a very crap corner that completely unsettles the car rolleyes

Ooops did this in France to pass an extremely slow moving agricultural vehicle & a queue of 8 cars along a double white lined road. Saw a potential opportunity, empty (off the road) layby up a hill, one swift time & distance calculation & hey presto what no queue

Passengers commented on my excellent opportunistic approach to swift motoring hehe

One near me too, and the green light phase is so short that it's quite useful.

....but only with the co-operation of its driver.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
