Hi

I swapped a car in May from a trade dealer via Ebay and he had a car check done which was all clear but i now need a bigger car so advertised it on Ebay for a swap or sale, i was close to doing a deal all that was to be done was an HPI check which i was fine with as it was done when i bought it, but i had a phone call from the bloke saying it was a cat 'c' write off! He forwarded me the report which was saying it was!
It has had a no. plate change in 2003 and the write off incident was before that in 2002 so all i can think is that the HPI check when i bought it was only checked to the registration it had at the time and did not go into the previous registration which was obviously the important bit! Surely i must have a case here for getting my money back but just not sure who to tell or how i stand legally on this? I have the report from when i bought the car and have started the ball rolling by Emailing them (mycarcheck.co.uk), any advice on what route i should be taking on this would be highly appreciated.

Regards Nigel

Hi mate

Get in touch with your local trading standards which are normally based at the council offices. They will advise you on the best action to take.

Good luck

There is an HPI guarantee upto £10,000 for loss of value resulting from incorrect info, but you would need to have provided them with both the Reg and the Vin number for the full check and therefore to be eligible for the guarantee.

www.hpicheck.com/newfrontend/guarantee.jsp

If you just did it against the reg then you might struggle, Vin number is obviously fairly inextricably linked to the car so the better option. Definitely worth speaking to them though.

Who was the check done by? (there are several companies who offer this service now, HPI being one of them).
Have you got the certificate from the check done when you first got the car?
Also, get your buyer to query the results of his check with the providor as the cherished transfer may have messed their records up a bit.

If they both fail, PM me the reg and I'll take a look.
