Coming home this afternoon, I came round a corner to find a mountain bike in the middle of the road. I stopped in a field entrance nearby and moved the bike onto the grass verge(I had a good look about for bodies in the field etc), I hung around for about 10 Min's hoping that the owner would come back. It was too nice a bike to just abandon on the verge and it wouldn't fit in my GTV so I hid it behind a wall, went home and called the local police and told them where it was. Just wondering did I do the right thing and if the owner does not claim it do I have "salvage rights" or will it just end up in a police auction?

Did the right thing in my mind. It might have fallen off the back of a pickup or something and the owner not know where it went. It's not like they would have deliberatly left it in the road if they owned it and wanted it!

You could have taken it and then placed adverts to trace the owner.
If no-one replies then bingo, you have a new bike.

You MUST make reasonable attempt to find the owner else you could be accused of 'theft by finding' (Huh?!)

I think telling to cops would cover you for making a reasonable effort!

You reported it rather than handed it in , so you might not have any claim , no harm in asking though.
If the bike is any good/valuable it probably wont make it to the auction as the bib have first dibs to buy.
What make / model was it ?

You're not trying hard enough!

Assuming you have suitable allen keys to hand, it can be done (although its a bit of a squeeze, as I discovered after travelling a fair old way to pick one up!)

VERY bad idea, you not heard of car jacking, and it's one of the best ways to get you to stop and leave you car running!

To be honest car jacking never crossed my mind, I don't think it's very common in rural Perth-shire, I was more concerned that there might be an injured cyclist lying in a ditch.
edited to add
I didn't leave my car running.

Call me psychotic but when do you ever get out of a car and leave it running?... I always take the key with me. (Wouldn't stop them bashing me over the head though..scratchchin)

Had a similar experience in the centre of Aberdeen some months ago. Out of the Pub around 12.30 . Walking down the main drag to a taxi rank, saw a mountain bike lying smack in the middle of an adjoining side street. Looked around in the area for any possible RTA victim, asked other (admittedly drunk people) if they knew anything about it.

Nobody seemed to know anything. ( Normal in Aberdeen on a Friday night).

Polis transit van pulled up a few yards down the street from me, so I pick the bike up and steer it down to them. Attempt to explain the circumstances under which said (expensive) mountain bike had been found. Basically told to F. off. Not interested.

Ended up wheeling the bloody thing 1/2mile to the cop shop and handed it in. Gave my details. What happened? Sweet FA never heard a thing from the tossers. F. em.

With PR attitudes like this BIB are totally losing the support of decent people.

Any BIB out there wishing to question this ,PM me for details.

Should have added that it was a female / womans bike. Surely cause for concern.

Sorry mate, only being light-hearted. I should imagine that the bike was never 'claimed' by anyone. It will have sat in the yard for months with a property tag on it, rusting away, before being put in an auction where it probably went for ten quid. Hence the BiB will have had no reason to contact you again. It will have been checked for a postcode mark or barcode etc, probably didn't have one (guilty of this on my own bike I must admit).

Can't really make excuses for the BiB in the van, they may have been busy dealing with something else, I've done it myself enough times, where I may have fobbed a member of public off and realised afterwards when it was too late how ignorant I must have looked, but too late then.

Yeah Hollywood, no problem. I understand how harassed the polis are on weekends in any city. I was under the impression though, that any "finder" had the item handed over to them after 3 months. Not that I have any use for a ladies mountain bike. Well, they might have given me the saddle!

scratchchin Trying to remember the score on this one. Did you sign a disclaimer at the nick? In the Met we have a 'Book 89' which is for property found in the street, and if I recall correctly you do have an entitlement to claim it after a set amount of time. It's been years since I was a Station Officer (front counter) though, so maybe it's changed....
