Hi there,

I was just wondering if it would be worthwhile reporting this van to the local Police. It parks near to where I work in Bath and I noticed the other day that the back tyres literally have the banding hanging out them - they're past even being slick. They must be dangerous. You'd think if the driver could afford a nearly new Mercedes Vito and some alloys for it he could afford £50 for a tyre.

have you considered just putting a note on his windscreen informing him he might want to consider some new tyres..

he may not have looked and not know - calling the police will result in 6 points and could cause the owner some financial hardship...

perhaps give the benifit of doubt before shopping him?

Good point, although I'm reckoning that because its on the back he's already swapped it off the front. I'll stick a note on it.

That said, if he's in charge of a van (which might well often be heavily loaded) at this time of year, he's currently a liability on the roads.
- He has a duty of care to everyone else to keep his vehicle legal;
- What if he has an accident between putting a note on the van and getting around to reporting him to the police if he does nothing...

I make it a point to check my tyres whenever I wash the car (at least fortnightly), and that's just a private car. I would suggest that someone owning a van should be taking AT LEAST as good care of the roadworthiness of their vehicle.

By all means leave a note, but give him no more than 'til Friday/Monday to sort it before you shop him.

It's not like your tyres go bald overnight, and its not like their hard to check either. I can't see any way a person can claim ignorance on the state of their tyres

I can see one partial way - if your tracking is way out and the insides are showing the canvas while the outside still has say 3-4mm.

But that's an extreme case, I would suggest.

i actually had that on my last car..

the front tyres had 2-3mm of tread over most of the tyre, but i decided to get them changed with the rears (which really did need doing) and the inside edge were showing canvas..

What annoyed me is it had a service the week before and they didnt tell me...

At the end of the day, i dont go around and check my tyres everytime i take the car out... and id like to think if i hadnt notice a bit of canvas (a stretch i know) that someone would put a note on my car rather than calling the cops...

I predict your last car was a Subaru Impreza and I also predict the useless servicing was carried out by Gatwick Subaru.

I did this to a Volvo 4*4 parked up in a local car park. The very next week, it had new tyres on.......

No real excuse for it given that most of the big tyre places do free checks.

I have to submit a written tyre check once a month from a suitable place and i check the van tyres myself every few days for general condition.

I'll see if it's in its usual spot tomorrow. The tyres on this are probably the worst I've ever seen on a road vehicle.

Unbelievable how little interest some take in their vehicles!

Well spotted by you, I would leave a note and check they're changed by tomorrow. That is just too dangerous to be on the road!

I twice put a note on a car (Vectra with baby seats in the back!) that I saw every 4 weeks at a job, nothing done from one month to the next (bits of the inners hanging out on the second time) so the next time I rang the police (on the non emergency number) and said i'd seen this car in a public car park a couple of times and it had really dodgy tyres. They rang back and said they'd pop in when they were passing. The next time I was there the car had 4 new tyres. A result - but only in the way that it (presumably) didnt go when he/she was driving and jeopardise everyone else on the road. If someone put a note on my car saying "your rear tyre is bald, illegal and bloody dangerous" i'd be at least checking them or getting them checked. Grrr.

They look quite low profile, last time I bought a van tyre I don't remember low profile being an option.
