...to continue to work for this increasingly totalatarian state?

A while back one of you commented along the lines of:

"...despite the governments best efforts there hasn't been a rush to
resign..."

Why not?

The state is getting to be pettier and nastier by the moment, why prop it up?

So it would appear that none of you watched 'Big Brother Britain' (TV More4, 9pm).

Frightening.

Watch the TV Schedules it will be repeated no doubt.

Even down to microchipping humans with a capsule injected under the skin the size of half a finger nail cotaining RDI transmitter and ID chip. Not science fiction but available NOW.

Wish as much effort was placed on society being law abiding by the public themselves so that a lot of these devices qould not be needed.

Last week had my chrome wheel tyre valve covers nicked off my motor on one side. How petty is that.

The vast majority of BiB will be doing their best - I am sure its the scrotes they are after. Its the middle and senior managers (as in any big organisation) that brown-nose to cover up there lack of competence and to look important.
Trouble is, with targets - as in the NHS - they take on a life of their own. Remove ALL targets and get the job done. Thats how we used to work and it wasn't chaos

Best wishes all

Most BiB are fine and don't deserve the kicking that they get.

Like most jobs in life, there are one or two who are on power trips but this is by no means the majority.

Sadly, it's the ones at the top, the Court system and the government who must give those on the street an almost impossible job to do.

It must be a bloody frustrating job much of the time and I really don't think that the everyday copper should be blamed for the failings of his or her superiors.

We need more power, and I'm proud and happy to be doing my job (despite the occasional whinge). I think few PHers will know what the Police really get up to on an average shift, they seem to think that we are involved in speed enforcemnet and fitting people up, laughable really.

There is an entire sub-culture in this country, the members of which I spend most of my time dealing with. If it wasn't for the thin blue line, society would be torn apart by these people which I spend my time protecting you from.

I'm sure many of you work for multinational firms who in some way shape or form are taking advantage of those in developing countries, or simply don't give a damn and are enjoying earning the fast buck at the expense of others. Are you going to resign in disgust? Wouldn't have thought so....

Absolutely HW, I do my job because I feel I make a positive difference to the area I choose to live.

I have met many people who share the views of those on this forum. Some, as you say work for multi-nationals that use (and abuse) power in ways I could never imagine. These people do not have an issue with this as it does not affect them directly (other than an increased salary).

At the other end of the spectrum are the non-contributors in life.

With regards to targets - I have none. Yes, like every one in every form of employment I have to justify my existance, but no one has ever told me I must get 'x' drink drivers or 'y' no docs in any given month.

Perhaps those that get on their high horse (and is it not always the usual suspects?) should look a little closer at the companies they work for or shops they buy from and see who around the world is really exploited.

Anyway off my soap box - got a lot of work ahead of me today ;o)

When I read that I thought of Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" and "stuff that you sitting with your shiny shoes in a nice warm office can never imagine and will never be able to fathom" (ok I can't remember the exact words...).

You're right. I'm sick of people moaning about the police and what they do and what they don't do and how they are useless government puppets. That tune usually changes when you need them though.

Same with these inquiries into incidents - you get countless lawyers and witnesses poring over shedloads of evidence and cctv footage from every angle, for weeks and weeks, and then blaming some cop who had to make a decision in a fraction of a second, based on the information he had available to him at the time, and then the crowd asking for blood if his split-second decision proved to be wrong 6 months later.

I wouldn't like to do it but I have to admire those who do. Yes there are some bad ones, but there again, like the one on the TV the other week, it's probably not easy being polite to a someone driving like a tt, when you have just turned the corner after scraping another one out of the scenery.

I don't have a particular cause to praise the police - when I got mugged a couple of years ago, and my shoulder broken, the police never managed to trace who did it, and told me after about 4 months they were giving up.

It's not the fault of the police - I'm sure they are just as frustrated at the lack of help they get from society to catch "real criminals," either through witness fear of retribution, or misplaced loyalty or whatever. Some of the levels of punishment are laughable as well - but again that's not the fault of the police, is it?

Honestly? For me?

I have a mortgage and bills to pay first off. I don't have any "real" qualifications (other than a solitary Geography A Level), so I'd not earn anything like what I do now elsewhere. I still think that the pay isn't ideal, but it's probably the best I can make with my skills/qualifications.

Secondly, I like to make a positive difference. I enjoy arresting burglars, robbers and drug dealers, and putting them before the Courts. I tend not to get frustrated by the paltry sentences they generally receive, because in reality, there is very little (nothing, in fact) that I can personally do to change that. What I can do is to ensure that I have done my job right, complied with the law, and filled in the forms that need filling in. I don't lie, I don't fabricate evidence, and I don't perjure myself in the square yard.

If someone is not charged (on the advice of the CPS), or is acquitted at Court, I know they will, generally, "come again". If they don't because they've had a fright, and behave themselves from thereon in, then that's a result too.

Thirdly, becuase whatever party forms the government, they're all (both) pretty much of a muchness. Yes it could be better, but it could be a whole lot worse.

I also use my discretion from time to time, you know...

Sadly Mungo and Dibble when you reach the day for your golden handshake and monthly brown envelope look back to the first year of your service and see if your efforts have succeeded in anything. Society better when you leave than when you joined?. No way.

Whereas a stone mason/builder can look back at his efforts and admire with pride what he produced was something. It is with sadness that I look back at my 30 and despite my best efforts find society is worse than when I joined. We now seem to take a pride in fiddling, cheating, being obnoxious, beligerent, self centered and other nasties that should have been nipped in the bud at birth.

As one dour Scotsman (not you GB) in Dads Army was prone to say "We're Doomed Mon, DOOMED"

yes I spend the vast majority of my time dealing with this subculture too (subculture is the best word to use) ... 99% of people would be shocked beyond belief if they knew what went on and if it were not for the police protecting you from these people it would be anarchy .... I was shocked when I first joined the job and I became aware of these types of people and what they do.

Again, I do the job to protect the public from people like that - It is incredibly satisying putting robbers, drug dealers, burglars etc away

The original poster has the wrong idea about what police work involves ... all you read on PH is "police state" bla bla bla, roadside fingerprinting will infringe my privacy bla bla bla (and roadside fingerprinting will be a fantastic tool TO HELP US CATCH THE CRIMINALS which I am sure you would like us to do?) ... and everyone here likes to jump on the same bandwagon.

The fact is that police work is radically different to how most people here think it is.

I love my job and I wouldn't do anything else

Apart from the cost issues, id be happy to carry an ID card and be fingerprinted whenever the police like, because whether it infringes my liberties technically or not, it actually does me no harm, but would be a pain in the arse for the scum that ruin the world. Nothing to hide, me.
Dont like this black box in cars stuff though, fair enough if it was used for identification, but charging people all that money to get around just because they know they cant afford to make enough railways just isnt right.

Look on the bright side, they didn't steal the other two.

Kids do this all the time, they only need 2 on a bicycle.

I'm not suggesting that I'm going to change "society" or even make a huge difference in the area where I work in; I'm not that naive. There are too many people with hands out going "Me, me, me."

As I said in my original post, I do it (now) because it's a reasonably well paid job for a chap of my limited talents. I'm at that stage where my pensions "jumps", and to get out now would be nuts financially for me.

On the odd occasion I do make a minor difference, it does put a bit of a spring in my step. The whole of our society is self centred, with more and more people worried about their "rights" rather than their responsibilities, so me locking up a few criminals won't change that.

I suspect you're right, and after my 30 years are up, things won't be any better. But at least I'll have tried to put something back, unlike the millions that simply take, take, take, and provide no benefit at all to society at large.

Completely agree with that, but unfortunately I think it is a natural reaction in a society where more and more of the rights we do / did have are being curtailed by the government.

How about instead of moaning about things etc etc I am trying to actively do something about it. I already look back on my career and know of at least 3 lives that are still here because of my actions. I don't do it for power or because I'm a bully I do it because I don't like thieves and bullies and without me and those I work with then whats left of society would not be worth saving. I personaly feel policing is a vocation and all the officers I work with work hours a week without pay and take a personal interest in making the community they live in safe. Yes the court system is failing but I have no control over that. I read on here about the way some people feel things are going but I'm at the front line and its not how some of you seem to think it is.

I enjoy my job and see many of the postives that come out of my intervention or that of other officers. I'd rather put something into society than take take take.

Perhaps if we only had laws worth abiding to rather than thousands of unnecessary bits of nasty control freakery things might be better?

In any case none of the big-brother jiz is needed.
