Can anyone offer some help on a slight parking issue I have?

What is the legal stance when receiving a parking ticket when the car registration number detailed on the ticket is incorrect? I would normally assume that the ownership details would not be retrievable from the DVLA and no further actions could be taken.

However, I believe that nowadays traffic wardens are equipped with digital cameras, so if they have captured my number plate on a digital picture, can they use this to chase me for the penalty?

Cheers

I think I'm right in saying that if the registration details on the ticket issued on the car are incorrect then the ticket is not valid.

I received a ticket 14 days ago in Richmond.

I tried and tried to pay for the ticket online but I wasnt able to due to technical difficulties (devine intervention I later found out), however when I rang to pay via the phone I noticed a problem with the ticket. They had noted down the letter 'I' as the number '1' for one of the characters of my registration.

I was put through to an appeals line (as far as I am aware) who had a photo of my registration with her. She told me that it was very unclear and hard to decypher the registration so I should email a copy of my V5 logbook to them. She also made a point in telling me that if they issued a ticket and incorrectly wrote down the registration then it is not valid because that vehicle does not exist, and you cannot issue a ticket to a vehicle that doesnt exist or belong to you.

I have sent in my appeal today so I will let you know of the outcome, but the friendly lady on the phone told me that she is 99.9% sure that the ticket will not stand.

If incorrect VRM recorded then the chances are that the recepient isn't going to pay so LA will send a Notice to Owner from the details obtained from DVLA from their record.

If they are cute cookies then before sending out they may check their records/photo, discover their mistake and send out a PCN with correct details. Gottcha.

If recepient writes in saying not him then a recheck of records may lead back to him. Gottcha.

Re para one when owner of car to which the incorrect number applies gets his NTO then up go the hackles and nasty letter to LA which makes then recheck their records and if photo taken ------ Gottcha.

But there again if LA discover the original they may well disengage. And I have faries at the bottom of my garden.

A work colleague of mine had a Fixed Penalty Ticket which had the wrong name of the road on it(?). He held out and refused to pay it and it went as far as a court summons. Three days before the case was due to be heard the CPS wrote to him and told him they'd decided "it was not in the public's interest to prosecute" the case was dropped and he was advised how he could claim costs if he so wished.

Very much a case of 'who would blink first'!!

I had a ticket which stated I was stopped in E1 (I was in E2), and the area I was parked in was incorrectly marked.

I wrote back explaining these facts, and have yet to hear anything more. On Christmas day, I will be 6 months clear of the (alleged) offence.

Fingers crossed.

One wonders how many photographs taken by wardens are "unclear". When I have seen them photographing vehicles they have ticketed they stand (usually because the have to) very close to the vehicle and aim at the ticket on the windscreen. There is a fair chance that the numberplate will be out of focus - Streaky

I got a parking ticket in Milton Keynes, one of the ones enforced by DaVinci so a decriminalised one, that had the wrong date on it and they said it was therefore invalid.
I don't know if there are differences between the standards for decrim ones and 'proper' traffic warden enforced ones though...

decrim ones are usually more relaxed about mistakes and arbitration is not bound by law or precedent. bit awkward. signage areguments don't always work with decrim ones.

Could they be photographing the tax disc?
