Hey Chaps

A note of caution for those of us that live/drive in Central London

Had a very close call last night coming through the hyde part corner/picadilly underpass. A normal place to blast through, windows down, etc - so a normal night
plenty of gas coming through it - a couple of taxis ahead that I didnt' bother overtaking at the last seconds - and suddely appearing in view are 3 trafpol all aiming their Pro Lasers down the tunnel at me. There's about 10 trafpol waiting to pull people over - actually in the middle of the road.

Anyway the looked very pissed off, that they heard me coming but didn't nick me - so i gave them a cheery wave - LOL

Lucky they didn't do you for not being in full control of your vehicle. You took the outrageous risk of removing a hand from the wheel to wave.

A word of warning, it may be a place to 'blast through' and being a TVR owner I know the appeal of tunnels, but, it has been the scene of at least two horrendous fatal collisions to my knowledge in recent times .... 'absolute carnage' was the word one of the officers used to describe the last fatal which was I believe at least 3 people maybe 4 .... you may well see officers with Lasers there a bit more.

Fair point - though i think that's the one from last november - which happened outside the tunnel ?
www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4153/is_20051107/ai_n15802081

I'm suprised that they haven't put a scamera in there yet - only a matter of time.

The way BIB's were lined it was purely a revenue generation for the end of the month

Yep, Thats one of the two I know - at one end of the tunnel. The other was in it + also late on.

As for revenue generation - Met Traffic Police make nothing from using Lasers or speed enforcement .... they are not like the cameras and you are likely to have a better chance of a chat as opposed to a ticket ... The scameras and Traffic Police might seem to come under the same umbrella, we can't get away from that, but they are very separate in real terms.

Once someone is stopped for a mild bit of speed and checks are done the person lying about their name or with no insurance or licence gets every ticket available. The honest, insured driver with a proper licence is decidedly more likely to get a warning only. Cameras can't do that !

i didn't know that they didn't get any revenue - maybe it was something to do with targets - I know herts police tend to target drivers at the end of the month to reach targets ?

totally agree with you re trafpol vs a camera

That sounds extremely dangerous, time to slam on the brakes to prevent an RTA and possible fatalities.

Good work sir, I'm sure inside they were secretly delighted that they'd slowed you down in time and prevented an offense.

Let's prevent crime together is the key here I think

I'm sure the big bright yellow sign at the start of the tunnel was also helping slow everyone down and preventing more offenses.

The accident you refer to was an Evo VIII that exited the tunnel at speed, clipped the kerb and flipped through the central reservation and ended up in a BMW and bounced off of a Taxi - it was the night/morning of one of our infamous tunnel runs - Lambo cop was working that night and it was indeed Carnage, the exit of the tunnel is indeed a favourite of the Metpol, as it should be,its a 30mph zone, bollox to your revenue generation cobblers, its a 30 zone!!

well buddy - the post was related to me dodging the bullet and giving them a friendly wave as i passed by - much to their annoyance.

In truth and without any BS they way the were doing it, was dangerous and stopping a series of cars on the exit of the tunnel is just bloody stupid !

Incidentally the guy that killed his mate exiting the tunnel has admitted death by dangerous driving yesterday at southwark CC - ivan mazour is the son ofa russian billionaire and was Eton educated with an IQ of 175 - not very bright if you kill your bessie mate whilst 3 times over the DD limit and high on drugs

Sounds like it was a drunk/drugged driver incident, he probably waan't going to obey any road rules, let alone a 30. Sounds like he still would have crashed even with police at the tunnel exit, but maybe not if they were at the tunnel entrance...

I still can't understand how you can have people waiting at the EXIT of the tunnel if you are not after revenue. If you were at the entrance you'd be preventing offenses and not making money.

As the police were at the exit they are allowing offenses to occur and making money. This is pure revenue generation, cobblers or no. Maybe crime prevention doesn't pay as well as watching the crime and making the numbers.

I thought policemen deliberately failing to prevent crime through choice would be an offense in itself?

Ivan mazour - jeez i know that guy though another community website - there's no excuse for being drunk and unable to make a rational decision not to drive.

Lack of experience - think he was only just 20 ?

Terrible injustice to the family who lost a son and those injured.

Still if BIB were sat at the beginning of the tunnel that night the accident would of been prevented - though he probably would of had an accident somewhere else.
These types of incidents cannot be prevented - it's matter of time

I agree with you, and i'm sure if there wasnt so much plod bashing was on here lambo et al would be on here defending why they do so.

But i had a text from him last night - they still target the exit of that tunnel, they recently had a DD speeding through the tunnel within an hour of them being there, had a word with loads of people about speeding and ticketed anybody above a good speed - i wont say what that limit is, as even i was surprised what the ticket speed is for them, but lets just say there were a few caught above 50mph.

Good, seems like their objective of getting people to take it easy in there is working then.

I was bit concerned with the suprise that 50mph was a high speed through there though!

Surely 35mph is a high speed if the traffic conditions are wrong, 50 is downright daft if you ask me in a 30 zone.

Exactly, appropriate conditions for the road, so do you think the exit of Piccadilly underpass is safe at 30mph when you are approaching Savoy etc when its a blind crest with a lane merging from the left with no traffic - its a hotspot at the end of the day, you were lucky, get over it and stop bleating on about it
