Fatal crash, strange Police statement
Discussion
BBC article
Sad case of a 15 year old killed near Aberdeen, continuing the poor record for Grampian this year.
However, Police statement makes reference to inappropriate speed. But NO mention of the fact the driver was only 16!

? Is it me. They must have said he was 16 otherwise how would you know? I'll qualify that the police did say he was 16.
No Im sorry Ive had a look over this again. The BBC are using quotes. They are reporting on part of a press release in relation to this incident.
As usual they have decided to edit out other bits and as usual somebody has decided with limited facts that the police are behaving in an odd manner.
Can I suggest the thread should have been.
National broadcasting company report some of the facts.
Its not a dig at you I'm only trying to put the record straight.

Fair enough. I just noticed the story and thought it was strange that no issue had been raised about the drivers age.
As you say it is more down down to poor editorial.
Not having a dig at Police as such, just a poor statement to give/use in this circumstance.

I think this is a BBC viewpoint. I have seen another TV report where the whole focus of a crash was on speeding - despite there being no mention of excess speed by the police.
However:
"That is to drive responsibly and at a speed appropriate for the conditions, particularly at this time of year, otherwise this tragic waste of life will continue."
I think that is fair enough though - every first frosty day of the year I see a car spun around somewhere.

It just highlights the poor standard of journalism in our country.
Journalism? I thought they all just read out/wrote down press releases these days - next someone will tell me they know a journalist capable of independent thought!! Journalists seemed to be completely Out To Lunch when Bliar was planning to spend all our money smashing up the middle east - I think they've got less currency now than used car salesmen and estate agents.
its funny how the press decide what slant they want to put on things instead of doing their job and just reporting it.
A while back there was an accident on a road up my way. A couple of nasty injuries and disruption to commuters as the road was blocked not a major road but big enough to cause a bit of delay.
There had been a cloudburst after a long dry hot spell. We all know the roads are like ice.
The car that spun was doing about 30mph in a 30. Fact the driver was driving too fast for the conditions while taking a bend. The driver was young and inexpierienced and when confronted with a skid slammed on the brakes.
The newshound that turned up (I was there) never asked how the casualties were it was all how did this happen, who is to blame.
My gaffer (an Inspector)(I say it again I was standing next to him said, "It would appear that speed may be one of the contributing factors" he also went on to talk about the road conditions and how drivers should be aware that rain on a dry road mixed with exhast fumes etc (actually an interesting guy to listen to)
The trafpol turned up and worked mega quick to get the road clear, they also had a diversion set up and broadcast on local radio within 20mins of accident.
Paper the next day.
Top Cop slams speeding driver who brought chaos to rush hour traffic.
I would submit not what happened but I imagine it sold a few papers.

Just to warm this up a bit.
Does anyone remember that Nisha Patel-Nasti http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lo was stabbed with her own knife, and only in the leg?
This crucial fact has been dropped from all the recent reports, completely misleading the readers as to what happened.
A young woman wanders out in her nightgown carrying a knife to confront a suspected car thief. What did she think was going to happen?
I'll say no more since there will be a trial, but I wish the media not bend each story to fit whatever 'message' is currently being pushed.

I'm sorry, so she asked for it is what you are trying to say? She desserved to be stabbed? Whether it was in the leg, chest, arm or finger...it was FATAL. I hate the fact that people turn on the victim in these circumstances. OK, she shouldn't have approached the situation like she did, but she did! That doesn't give the hooligan the right to stab, punch, shoot or harm her in any way!
Imagine this, my 21st Birthday, my Mum and Dad have bought my a really nice watch (worth hundreds say), and I wear it on a night out with my friends. Later in the evening I get mugged because someone saw I had a nice watch. Did I deserve to be mugged?
Now, the answer is "No"...if you thought it was something other than that, you should re-think your outlook on life and society.
Also, return what you stole from the poor buggers you mugged aswell.
[EDIT]Oh, and I think most journalists and news companies are scum BTW, just so I haven't missed the point of the topic!

I am saying that the media have a tendency to bias their stories one way or another to suit their own agenda.
This happens to be an extreme case.
I am fed up with being told what my opinion should be. Just give us all the facts, we'll draw our own conclusions.
In this case the perpetrator obviously did not intend to kill her (stabbed in the leg?). There was obviously a struggle and she got cut by her own knife. The media are trying to make it sound like this was just one more typical knife-carrying hoodie mugging situation, when clearly it wasn't. If *she* had not brought the knife, then she could not have been stabbed with it.
On a personal level, of course this is a tragedy for all involved.

I think the relevant point is summed up here: ThisIsLondon said:
A spokesman from the Damilola Taylor Trust said: "Statistics show that the vast majority of knife crime injuries are caused when kids carry them to defend themselves and then they are used against them."
It doesn't only apply to kids. Speaking of which - take a look at the name of the Damilola Taylor Trust website designers.

no, but if you took a knife out with you in case anyone tried to steal your watch, then got stabbed with that knife, you might be able to compare the two cases

If she hadn't been stabbed and the police had come round the corner to be confronted with an "alleged" car thief and a woman with a large kitchen knife, what could each person be theoretically charged with, which is worse, a car thief or a knife carrying member of the public.
If a car thief got his car stolen we wouldn't have much sympathy.
