so whats the deal with these then?
i saw two the other day within 3 miles of each other (either side of holyport, berks)
just wondering weather they incorperate a speed camera in with these or are they just checking your car details as you drive by (insurance, tax, etc)?
the first van was a big green thing with the cameras sticking out of two flaps in the back, and it said ANPR in big writing on the side, but there was no police markings of any kind.
the 2nd van was a smaller white van with a police stripe down the side, again witha pair of cameras sticking out of flaps at the back.
what are your thoughts/experiances?

Odd, usually ANPR vans are in full police livery often you get advanced warning by the number of plod seemingly hanging around (often bikes). But a white one with simply ANPR on it and nothing else sounds odd to me.
I don't think they do speed camera stuff at the same time although driving like a wally would be poor form considering all the plod around.

Two scenario's:
1) I was caught recently for not giving way to oncoming traffic on on single lane bridge. The vehicle was a Nissan Micra with the cameras sticking out of the sunroof
Nervous at being filmed and not knowing why I joined the queue of three cars which had been flashed through by the driver who had the right of way.
They (the council) have done me for not giving way and the cameras does not show the lights flashing on the other vehicle. I have contested this and asked for the full video clip.. This is another stealth tax and they can poke it up their backsides - I am not paying this whatever happens.
2) Bailiff use: Recently a large Bailiff company has spend a lot of money building a national database of hpi cars with payments oustanding. The ops then drive to a busy area and park up. When a wanted car goes through it flashed up the address that the car is regeistered to. Otherf bailiffs then visit immediately to lift or immobilise the vehicle.

This seems to be a relatively new thing. Councils have realised they can make a fast buck by issuing tickets for stupid 'offenses' with very little or no discretion or leeway. A few weeks ago my Mum was on her way home from work, and a vehicle waiting to turn right at the traffic lights was partially obstructing her lane, so she went round it and continued through the junction. A few days later a ticket turns up for driving in a bus lane. The fact that only two wheels went in it, for the duration it took to go around another car, or that to sit there and wait for the other vehicle to move would have needlessly blocked the road completely doesn't seem to make any difference. £100 please, or £50 if you cough strait away. Oh, and if you want to query it or see any video/pictures you lose that discount. Bastards.

If this was TVP area their speed wagons are white Peugeot Boxter vans. HTH.
Which means they've scrapped the army green one that always sits on the A34 off the M40 J9. Let's hope the DVLA database is getting better, they admitted there were errors in about 30% of it a year or so ago. BiB were getting p155ed off with the false alarms allegedly.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
