Jesus! Now I wouldn't want to attempt to justify that piece of driving! There's a time and a place and that wasn't it!

Looks like the A1(M) between Brampton Hut and Yaxley.

It is:
- dead straight.
- dead level.
- pretty new.
- 4 lanes wide.
- Usually nothing on it.

If there was a place to do 200MPH on the road, this is as good as any. He is a brave person as I have seen many a blue V70 down that road.

Why he doesnt join in with VMAX I dont know.

Yes may be, but the time was totally a poor choice!!

You do not do that sort of speed when other road users are clearly around, and overtake them at twice or three times their speed, or undertake come to that, unless you're a selfish bstard with a death wish!!

The stupid thing is though, if he was caught he would be treated the same way as someone doing that speed at 3AM in the morning with not another vehicle in sight! That's the ass in the law!

What would you get if you got caught doing that? I'm guessing a fairly hefty fine and a driving ban, but would it result in jailtime? If it would, that is a bit harsh, just for going too fast.

Depends what offences you are charged with.

Just going too fast doesn't result in jail time, because speeding is not a custodial offence.
If the speed is considered dangerous enough in the circumstances for a dangerous driving charge, then that can result in jail time.

Seconded.
Way too much traffic, not enough visibility (the bit we can see), if someone pulls out on you then you've got a potential 130mph closing speed.

Lower down the A1M (just north of the A14?) can sometimes be deserted and really is runway quality (hence I'd expect speed traps there!), but you'd still need to pick a truly deserted time for that type of speed.

It is a classic case where the numerical speed even here is not the problem, it is the use of the speed and the agressive driving, which could quite easily be dealt with under a dangerous driving charge, rather than resorting to speed for newspaper headline effect.

Well, considering he did 200 MPH (on the dial, anyway) on a fairly busy road without killing anyone, it does sort of give the lie to the whole "speed kills" message.

Personally, I can't really see the difference between doing 200MPH on a 4-lane-wide motorway and doing 200MPH on an Autobahn ... other than that ze Chermans are trained to expect this kind of behaviour and both the person doing 200 and the people who aren't doing 200 need to keep their eyes open and not drive on autopilot.

HOWEVER, IF you dumb down driving skills and encourage people to drive like mindless sheep, well, then, this kind of behaviour could be considered dangerous. But personally, I'd be more inclined to blame the people who dumbed down driving and encouraged people to drive like mindless sheep.

On an straight, empty road at 3am then perhaps not so bad, but in that sort of traffic it's just stupid.

Headlights at 200mph would have to be extraordinarily good to be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear at 3am.

I've vmaxed on the autobahn in more traffic than that. It's not inherently dangerous if everyone on the road is expecting it or travelling at the same speed.

It's not stupid, we are only taught to believe that it's stupid or dangerous or irresponsible. The danger comes from the mindless sheep on that road who have been taught by their betters that speed is dangerous and therefore they do not expect anyone else to drive fast, hence they pay no attention to the road around them.

Fair point, I wouldn't try either, 200mph is reckless on any UK public road.

Agreed it's not stupid if like on autobahns it's expected, however it's reckless in the UK as no one can reasonably expect that dot in the third lane in the rear view mirror to be approaching three times your speed as you move to overtake from lane two. I wouldn't trust the road surfaces on UK roads at that sort of speed, either.

On a dry sunny day, that's a pretty good stretch of tarmac. It's nasty in the rain though, loads of standing water.

Indeed warnings will be signed realtive to how the surface may affect you at legal speeds, not necessarily illegal ones.

On a section of the A1(M) south of Peterborough there is an undulation in the outside lane that is hardly noticed at legal speeds but is far more prominent at very high speeds.
