Request the Police proove it was your car and not a clone.
This is mentioned on a few websites - If the picture is from a camera van and shows you driving your screwed but surely if its from the rear you can insist that the police proove its yours. With any crime the onus of proof is on the Police and the fact that I can wander round a Lotus open day etc and take down a couple of number plates from identical models ( even easier with more common cars ) and have them made up without any questions asked, then put them on my car and drive around with impunity. There is an identical Elise about ten miles from me - he would have a seriously hard time proving that he had not set off a camera near his home in such a rare car. Madcop whats the situation.

Well. The easiest way to avoid Gatso prosecution is drive past them at slightly under the speed limit...or am I missing something?

You cannot just clone number plates anymore. You need to produce a valid driving license so it gets registered to prevent crime etc...

You can mail order plates from Europe. Try a quick Google. The legislation on V5s is ill thought out and unworkable (what a surprise.)

Its actually the V5 you now need in order to buy a plate.

However, Outlaw is right - there's always somebody that'll do one 'under the counter', and what's to stop you buying a blank plate and letters and making one up yourself?

Don't get me wrong. I love to drive fast. As fast as I can on a track.

But choosing an appropriate speed for a public road is a skill any enthusiastic driver should have at their disposal. I view GATSOs in the same way as any other hazard - and choose my speed to go by them accordingly.

That's why I don't believe they should be hidden BTW.

The guy in the office next door makes his own plates by buying the clear plastic plate and yellow/white backing straight from the manufacturer’s distributor, then printing the lettering (and any logo(s) you like) onto printable clear film he gets from an office suppliers. Not sure how he sticks it all together but they look quite professional when he’s finished.

Unfortunately he was on holiday when I recently needed a plate. So I got one made up without any documentation at all at my local car spares place. They were reluctant at first until I told them (truthfully) that it was to go on the wall of my reserved parking space at work and not onto a car. I also asked them not to put their name and postcode on it (also a new legal requirement I think) and they were happy to oblige. I chatted to them while they made it, their view was that the new plate legislation is a complete waste of time and will only inconvenience people while not bothering real criminals.

Of course you can get any plate you want made up and size - without and paperwork apart from your credit card!

Best course of action is buy a private plate but don't register it to any car (hold it on retention). Make the plate up anyway, stick it on you're car. No more gatso fines, no more parking tickets and the occasional stop by plod to ask why the plate is registered to a Morris Minor in N Ireland and not a the flashy sports car that it's on at the moment.

"Sorry occifer but the DVLA have cocked up the paper work and I'm in the process of dealing with it here's my original paper work " . OK sir get it sorted asap ..

Ya boo sucks...

whatever

As with many things these days, it's more likely a case of "being seen to be doing something".

A bit like this anti-speeding thing, really. Road humps, pinch-points etc. Often make the environment worse (noise, pollution etc) but it seems, to the unaware, like something's being done.

Not disagreeing about the state of the law, just the real life practicality of obtaining the plates.

That's as maybe, but sadly, choosing an appropriate speed limit for a public road is apparently beyond the capabilities of many local councils nowadays. Department of Transport guidelines for setting speed limits are routinely ignored.

Maybe we should all have our NI number instead of number plates. No fraud then!

Yeah right. Detailed instructions on obtaining a different passport, driving licence and NI number widely available. As, err someone up there ^^^, said it only inconveniences the honest.
